ftr, I'm perpetually jealous of soccer fans and their singing. I'd love to see these these things in American basketball.

The weird thing is that a) American pro soccer has plenty of this, and b) so does college basketball, yet it's largely absent from traditional American pro sports with the exception of the 7th inning stretch in baseball.

American soccer culture is built around emulating the Europeans. It's the only major US sport where people would openly admit the European equivalent is much superior.

Major???

MLS would come in likely behind NASCAR and even Golf. It's likely even behind UFC and perhaps just ahead of WWE (which isn't a sport but whatever).

Part of why it is what it is, is that it's not a major sport yet (seems to be going that path though).

We're talking about sporting culture, not pro sports leagues. You also assume that being an American soccer fan automatically means you're watching the MLS instead of the EPL, La Liga, etc., which is not the case. Just like we have many non-American NBA fans, U. S. fans still want to watch the best leagues. Numerically speaking, soccer is the second most participated in youth sport and third most collegiate. That's pretty major.

I thought we were talking about the culture at the stadiums? If that wasn't implied context, I'm not sure why such a comment would have been made in the first place.

Even if you bring those prices down, it won't happen. The US culture vs other cultures are just too different. Euro fans are like militarized when attending games. I don't know what's in their water there but its not that serious over here.

The question was why MLS stadiums had more of a European atmosphere than other US sports, which lead to a discussion about US soccer culture and where its influences are derived. US soccer culture is not strictly MLS.

Additional context.

An EPL match averages around 800k U.S. viewers.

MLS about 120k.

Just because the MLS is a minor league doesn't mean that soccer is not a major U.S. sport.

It is in the context of the stadiums here. The rest is meaningless.

But that doesn't change that in the US, soccer is not one of the major sports or sports cultures.

And the question was why those stadiums had a decidedly European atmosphere, to which the response was that it's the culture of the sport in the US. The culture matters in context of the question.

You seem weirdly fixated on the "major" when it was the most irrelevant part of the point. I used major to distinguish it from some niche, decidedly European sport that nobody has heard of.

One could just accept that soccer isn't a major sport...calling it a major sport is just a weird thing to say. If it were a major sport, we'd have less of the crazy crowds, this is all connected. Because it's a smaller more niche sport in the US, the culture can be distinctly different from the 4 major sports.
