That would be useful when the team is struggling to score, especially the second unit.
If he's almost automatic on that, teams may start sending double teams which would create wide open shots for other players.
What FG% of making that shot is automatic for you? If he's making 50% of those shots that's a rate of only 100 points per 100 offensive possessions.
It's going to have to be much higher than he's been able to make. There have been stretches in his career where he either went downhill to the hoop or get the ball way down into the paint and rise for like 6-foot jumpers.
But the whole idea of someone going for a midrange shot when they needed a bucket, that's what KD did when he was on the team, get the ball with the clock running out and create a shot, get a bucket.
I will say this, Kuminga is more likely to make those shots than Jimmy is at this point in their careers.
I'm not saying he will achieve the high efficiency to rely on him but he's also only 22 (turning 23 in a couple of weeks) so who's to say that he can't improve a lot?
SGA made a big jump in efficiency and scoring volume in 2022-2023, when he turned from 24 to 25. JK is unlikely to have a development trajectory like SGA but it's likely that he will improve with regular minutes. His first couple of seasons, the minutes were inconsistent.
Presumably the Warriors are offering the contract based some on potential, as well as salary ballast.
I'm not convinced that the team has decided that he will never be a good player in their system based on the last half of last season when he returned from injury and didn't fit in with the new rotation after Butler arrived.
