People are missing some nuance here. Yes, Harper is very fortunate to play with Wemby. But Victor has also benefitted from playing with Harper, who's already the best floor general on the team. Folks are bringing up Wemby's early career here, so I assume everyone remembers with he looks like when he doesn't have a PG. He has a ton of individual greatness, but he's still a big and benefits from being set up well. Harper's also part of three of the top-five and five of the top-10 most superlative player pairings the Spurs have had so far. Victor, in comparison, is 2/5, 4/10. This is not simply a matter of Wemby making Harper look good.
I'm not sure that Flagg would be putting up better numbers on a team with a clear first option who also benefits from a PG setting him up. That would mean Flagg would be functionally the third option on the Spurs. He'd obviously be great defensively, but it's possible Victor and the guards would eat up stock numbers and make it hard for Flagg to show out there either. He'd probably fit into the team very well but not stand out in a similar way to Harper but without having a second unit to himself to run like Dylan has.
I don't know if Harper will remain a serious ROY contender once the team is fully healthy, but he's clearly showing his talent. Spurs fans have every right to be pleased and to fall back on their general inertia against trades. I don't think Dallas fans should be disappointed at all though. Yes, they would have been just fine with Harper had they gotten the second pick instead. But the Mavs have Flagg for a career, not a season. Even if he doesn't look superlative now, they have that position squared away. They need a PG. So get one next year.
