There is a simple explanation. Doncic losss 100 million dollars by being traded and only had 18 months left on his contract.
So as soon as trade rumors started....doncic' agent informs the entire league that he will not resign with a team that trades for him. This turns Doncic into a rental player.....thereby drastically decreasing his trade value. Not only is he is a rental player....he's also going to be bitter towards the team that he just warned not to trade for him because they just cost him 100 milloon dollars. Probably at risk of claiming "back issues" for 18 months.
So the mavs were never going to get the paul george type return on the deal.
Sounds similar to what Pascal did to us (allegedly).
Yah i guess sorta kinda. I was also thinking about kawhi.
We wouldve had to pay ALOT more if kawhi was signed for 3 or 4 seasons. But neither Kawhi nor Siakam lost 100 million dollars by being traded. The idea that Luka would've cooperated with being offered to the entire league while losing 100 milly is absurd. He would've done everything in his power to stop that.
Of course, this explanation doesn't answee the priamry question "why trade Doncic at all especially given the timing?" But it does answer the question "why didnt they get more for him?" Or "why didnt they start a bargaining war?".
They couldnt.
As for the first question.. my best guess is that they thought he had serious addiction issues and that he would become a financial liability.
