I think I would rather have IQ lol. Cheaper, flat contract, better shooter, more valuable for putting together a winning group.
He was fantastic when he was more explosive and insanely aggressive back in 2022.
The issue is he essentially missed 2 years of basketball due to his off-court issues and injury. He's not as explosive as he was and isn't nearly as aggressive as he was.
And he's a red flag because his style of play is going to become an issue as he gets older.
Ja is only 26 years old and it was a shoulder injury, why could he not get back the explosiveness he had?
The Masai/Bobby strategy that many supported was to seek & pounce for a distressed star for cheap when the situation arise. Well, we are in this situation and if all it took is a trade where IQ is the best player going out, then from that strategy's perspective & asset management perspective, you do it and then leave it to your highly touted development coach (Darko) to rehab Ja back into his all star, All-NBA 2nd Team form.
Again, under the "go for the distressed star strategy," this is a no brainer. This would only step one though because this creates a bigger hole from a 3PT shooting perspective. Bobby will have work to do but at least if Ja can be rehabilitated, we'd have a legit star (BI ain't it) to build upon.
Maybe, but his style of play makes him much more susceptible to injury, and even before his off-court issues he still missed significant playing time every season, even at his peak. The most games he played in a given season was 67 in his rookie year. Even in his best two years in 2022 and 2023, he missed 25 and 21 games.
He has not shown any improvement skill wise since his 3rd season, which is not conducive to him being able to have a long career. Moreover, he's not a physically "strong" player who can handle contact well, so even if he is aggressive, his body can't withstand so much pounding.
Not worth the risk unless you can just swap Quickley and Walters/Dick straight up...I wouldn't give any future picks in a deal.
