Tyran Stokes, Kansas — 6' 8" Guard

Post#1 » by Caneman786 » Thu Apr 9, 2026 6:32 pm

The poll above ("Is Tyran Stokes your #1 pick in the 2027 NBA Draft?") runs for 175 days (until October 1, 2026). Users can change their votes until then.

TYRAN STOKES is a consensus five-star basketball recruit in the United States' high school class of 2026. He is the consensus #1 player in his class. All of ESPN, On3 / Rivals, and 247 Sports all have him at #1.

Stokes is a highly decorated player who has extensive experience playing for USA Basketball, where he won three gold medals playing for the 2025 USA Men's U19 National Team, 2024 USA Men's U17 National Team, 2023 USA Men's U16 National Team.

In the 2025–26 season, his senior year of high school, Stokes played high school basketball for the Rainier Beach High School Vikings in Seattle, Washington (with notable teammate freshman J.J. Crawford, Jamal Crawford's son). Rainier Beach had a 29-1 record. Stokes had a game where he scored 63 points on senior night. To end the season, Stokes led Rainier Beach to a Class 3A Washington state title in a game where he scored 16 points in a 75-53 win.

During the season, Stokes averaged 31.0 points, 13.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 4.0 steals per game.

In late spring 2026, Stokes played in all three of the McDonald's All-American game (where he was a starting forward for Team West, which won 102-86 against Team East), the Nike Hoop Summit (where he started for Team USA in its 102-100 overtime victory against Team World), and the Jordan Brand Classic (where he started for Team Air in its 135-133 victory against Team Flight; in this game he led all scorers with 29 points and was tied for the most minutes played of any player with 24 minutes played).

Stokes was born on October 12, 2007 (making him three months younger than Cameron Boozer, the youngest player selected in the 2026 NBA draft). His hometown is Louisville, Kentucky. If he declared for the 2027 NBA Draft, he would be 19 years and 8 months old on draft day.

Of the top 20 recruits (as per ESPN, On3 / Rivals, and 247 Sports) in his class, Stokes was the final player to commit to a college. He signed with the University of Kansas Jayhawks in the Big 12 Conference on April 28, 2026, and he will play college basketball there as a freshman in the 2027 season.

The University of Kansas listed him as a guard who is 6' 8" tall and who weighs 230 pounds. He wears the #4 jersey for the Jayhawks.

Cameron Ross of NBADraft.net wrote this profile on April 15, 2025, after his junior year of high school ended.

.
NBA Comparison: Caron Butler

Strengths: Physically gifted with excellent size and strength for a guard/wing prospect … Measured around 6’7”, 230 pounds with a nearly 7-foot wingspan and explosive vertical ability … Plays downhill with force and thrives finishing above the rim, especially in transition … A high-motor competitor who brings toughness and consistent energy on both ends of the floor … Defensively versatile—his frame and instincts allow him to guard multiple positions … Averaged 1.85 steals and 1.1 blocks for Team USA at the 2024 FIBA U17 World Cup, showing impact as a disruptive, aggressive defender … Very effective moving without the ball—cuts with purpose and regularly creates easy opportunities near the rim … Has strong body control and can finish through contact—shot 67.4% inside the arc across 7 games with Team USA, and 59.6% on 2PT attempts (302 shots) during his junior high school season … Rebounds extremely well for a lead guard—pulled down 7.0 per game for Team USA (1.5 offensive), and 9.3 per game as a junior (1.9 offensive), often mixing it up in traffic … Quick second jump allows him to clean up misses or extend possessions … Flashes potential as a connective passer in the open floor and in attacking closeouts … Instant spark plug—averaged 12.2 points in just 18 minutes per game for Team USA off the bench, giving consistent production in limited time … Projects as a powerful, high-floor contributor who can provide transition offense, perimeter defense, and rebounding from the wing.

Weaknesses: Still developing as a long-range shooter … Has shown flashes from three, but not yet a consistent threat—shot 4-for-14 from deep at the U17 World Cup (28.6%) and 30.6% on 76 attempts during his junior season … Form is compact but can be streaky, and he’ll need to improve confidence and off-the-catch rhythm to be more reliable at the next level … Free throw shooting remains a concern—55.1% on 29 attempts for Team USA and just 65.3% on 277 attempts as a junior, which raises questions about touch … Ball-handling in the halfcourt is an area for improvement … His pace can be inconsistent—sometimes playing too fast and out of control, which leads to charges or turnovers … Can get too reliant on athleticism to bail him out, rather than using angles or footwork to create space … Averaged under 4 assists per game during junior season, with nearly a 1:1 assist-to-turnover ratio, which reflects a need for better decision-making … Doesn’t often create separation off the bounce and lacks a reliable pull-up game … Can defer too often when his team needs him to take over … Post-up potential exists but he currently relies more on athleticism than technique, needing to improve seals and footwork … Can become jumper-reliant and settle when driving lanes close.

Outlook: A physically mature, two-way wing with elite transition scoring, rebounding, and defensive tools … One of the top 2025 prospects, said to be currently in the process of reclassifying into the senior class (which would make him eligible for the 2026 NBA Draft, should he choose to enter after next season) and choosing a college destination … Previously played at Prolific Prep alongside AJ Dybantsa, fueling speculation that the two could join forces again at the college level … If the jumper continues to improve and the decision-making sharpens, he has a chance to make a major impact at the college level and eventually translate into an energy wing or combo forward in the NBA.

Notes: Played his first two years at Prolific Prep before transferring to Notre Dame High School (CA) as a junior … Won gold medals with USA Basketball at the 2023 FIBA U16 Americas and 2024 FIBA U17 World Cup … Named MaxPreps First-Team All-American as a sophomore after averaging 13.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game … Starred for the Oakland Soldiers U17 team in 2024, averaging 20.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.9 assists—finishing top 10 in scoring on the EYBL circuit … Viewed as a blue-chip prospect with high-impact potential if the jumper becomes more consistent.

Hey, KU has a #1 pick more recently than the wildcats.

You know I'm gonna drop this kid 3 spots, you know, when someone speaks, you know like, this it detracts from their charisma and marketability, you know, there are no real stars in the league who, you know, speaking like this on camera.

Put kid in media training. Classes shambolic. Basketball life. Media training essential.

Not trying to be mean but this kid has anti-charisma. Listen to Boozer, Dybantsa and Peterson. All 3 are so much better speakers before college.

Well, here's another kid deciding to play for Bill Self. We'll see how it goes, I guess.

If Kansas is mediocre again I have to imagine Self is finally out? I do not like this decision at all.

LOL, have you talked to an 18 year old recently? This is all of them. Who cares.

The biggest concern is Bill Self trying to sabotage another potential #1 pick. That Kansas bag must be something special.

Kansas must pays big bucks every year for that #1 pick. You see this toxic cloud between Peterson and the program, regardless of whose fault, and yo, let me sign up for that 22-12 season, 5th seed experience in Lawrence motherfracken Kansas

I'm really of the belief that these kids should go to a school that allows them to shine as a #1 seed, best program in the nation and complete for NPOY. Bill Self and Kansas just doesn't give me those beliefs.

difference between Peterson and Stokes is Stokes actually cares. He won't miss games and he'll try hard on both ends so he'll make his teammates better. He'll be in NPOY discussions. Kansas also got Kinney who is a dog too. With the transfers and other 4 star guys they'll probably be legit contenders this year.

Ehh Kansas is a 3rd seed tops next year. Freshmen don't really drive impact in most cases.

Self has finished

23-11
21-13
23-11
28-8

Four years in a row not without talent.

NIL is gonna load up a lot of schools like St. John and Houston without much NBA talent, but plenty of super senior players.

This is not to say Stokes has or doesn't have talent. These days it's pretty 70/30 that high ranked players play well in college.

I fully expect Stokes to abuse his matchups in college and look like a potential #1 overall pick from the basic statistics.

But if I’m an NBA talent evaluator, it’s going to depend a lot on HOW he does the abusing. I know he can play physical, high effort defense, something you can’t say about Dybantsa or Peterson. But if all he does is mash in college — meaning he’s still a crappy shooter outside the paint, still mediocre at the line, still isn’t a good passer, still has a pretty basic handle and just tries to go through everyone because he mostly can — I don’t care how good he is at it. Wasting a top 3 pick on Corey Maggette is dumb as hell.

Also, although it’s probably just NIL budget, part of me believes Bill Self is some kinda ultra master hypnotist or something.

I agree. I do think Stokes will smash in college as a freshman. Physical athletic players do well in college relative to NBA.

The anti Kansas agenda is hilarious. Darryn isn’t falling further than 2 on draft night. Tyran will be more than fine. He wasn’t signing up to play for Mark Pope just like any other top recruit isn’t.

I don't think he will be bad as a college player - I think he is less likely to develop as much as he would under a better coach than Bill Self, of which there are many. I don't think Mark Pope is one of them, though.

On the contrary, you just described Scottie Barnes. Maggette never played defense more than 5 or 6 possessions a night.
