Ingram went for much shorter bad salary, a “bad first” (as it was viewed at the time), and a 2nd. I’d even say Ingram had much more value than RJ does now, so should keep ratcheting the expected value down a bunch?

Best of luck convincing another team to take on Poeltl’s deal for RJ. I would imagine if anyone was willing, that would have been done last trade deadline or this summer?

But Poeltl missed time this past season because of a balky back that just couldn’t get right. Toronto tried desperately to trade him, and if he was able to play, that would’ve helped a ton. He wasn’t. And the extension was a bit of an “own goal” against Toronto, so far. I would think he’d have to take a lot less than he got. I think it’s similar to when Indy extended Brogdon earlier than they had to and his back gave out.

I’ll leave you be on this topic, though. I’ve said my peace.

They were considering trading for Sabonis with that package. I'm suggesting a step down from that where they try and basically dump salary. It's within the realm and they were interesting RJ, but not Poeltl. The outgoing piece has changed here so it would at least be considered.

Poeltl played in the playoffs and was a part of Toronto's best line ups. He didn't play a lot of games because of rest, injury prevention and previously tanking. The back isn't an issue, the limited minutes is because there are good players behind him. He's been a 25-29 MPG player for his whole career. Click the link I sent above to see that.

The man had back injuries. It's not a secret. Like, everyone knows and talks about it? Heck, even the link you shared shows he played his lowest total of games ever, and his lowest mpg since 2020? :dontknow:

You are sourcing some random guy Mete Makarnaci isn't an analyst. He's a random poster with a blog.

Poeltl was actually more impactful than CMB in that series. The Raptors best line ups were with him on the floor.

Poeltl being inconsistent in the regular season is more about him not playing with a true PG than his back. He needs someone to set him up on defense.

Of course the Raptors were out rebounded by the Cavs. The Cavs have a massive front court and the Raptors game plan was to go small.

None of that indicates an ongoing back issue.

We were offering Sabonis for rj poeltl and 2 firsts. Toronto said no and only wanted to offer 1 first. The kings said no and so the trade fizzled. Keep in mind sabonis was coming off an injury at that point so his value was lower and most people consider his contract to be a bad contract because he is overpaid.

Sure he was in a potential deal for Sabonis but the the context and total deal need to be considered, and the kings wanted extra value to take on the contract. Noone is taking on poeltls deal without real compensation.

Sabonis isn't worth that much. Two good starters is the best value they'll get. I predict they'll panic in typical Kings fashion and sell him for next to nothing or cave for the Raptors deal if it's even available at that point.

Check the Ingram deal. Ingram is worth more than Sabonis, Sabonis isn't a type of player that can really be built with. Defensive Cs are more valuable than offensive Cs. I had interest in Sabonis in the past since I saw stretch potential but his release is slow and inaccurate. I would guess he expires on the Kings and walks for nothing.

The only way the Kings get real talent on their team is if they look into pre agency and trade for an expiring they can woo into staying. That's probably RJ.

I really doubt the Raptors offered any picks in that deal. It was two starters for 1 slightly better starter. Not many Raptors fans were excited about that deal.

Extra year on Ingram deal. So Raps save money.

we are not trying to dump Ingram/we are fine with his extra year. the goal right now is to get better, not save money (hence kawhi trade)

To be clear, are you arguing that (A) " Poeltl has NEVER had a back injury, and he only missed time to tank, etc"? Or are you trying to say that (B) "Poeltl HAD an ongoing back injury, but is now perfectly healthy and DOES NOT have an ongoing back injury any more?"

Because, we KNOW that Toronto is hoping he's past it, but there's no concrete evidence, yet. If he shows no ill effects of a bad back for a full season, then we can start discussing his value based on him being healthy, which would make him a fine add to many teams, and with a contract that wouldn't be bad. But we can't do that yet when he's had issues for multiple seasons in a row.

Unless you meant injury issues in general, but minus "rest" games he was on pace for 65+ in 24-25. Played less than every other game/missed 12 of 20 games to end the season during a tight tanking race

Has Poeltl had a back injury? Or rather, has he missed time for a back injury at all? Or was he just being rested as a healthy scratch this past year?

Jakob himself has said he had back issues.

I have a buddy who covers football and played DT for many years. One of his favorite things to say when he's having problems yet again is, "Nobody used to have a bad back."

This is a deeply weird conversation. When you're dealing with people as massive as NBA bigs, back injuries pick up a hell of a lot more scrutiny than twisting a knee. That has nothing to do with the Raptors or Poeltl or whatever other homer excuse you want to make. It's a giant human being with on the record back problems of some sort.

I’m glad SOMEBODY is putting this into plain English!!!

Thirty years as an orthopedics and spine specialist. Seven foot tall guys with back issues generally don’t get “better” in a “back to full playing strength and ability” manner when they are already thirty years old. It only gets progressively worse. Sometimes faster. Sometimes more slowly and steadily. But they don’t ever get right again once this progression starts.

And in this case with Poetl’s build (heavy Euro not athletic and lean), that’s the end. It might be ok with a very load managed situation for a bit longer to get through to the $5 million dump off after the next two years.

But in the end if you are taking on his deal NOW, you have to assume that you are eating the next two years for a guy who might not even play for you a lot of that time.

I haven't said anything of the sort! You're just making stuff up completely here!

How much do you think starters should be paid? Once you figure out the answer to that question you'll see why you're wrong here.

Again, I didn't say he's not a starter! I said he has health questions that limit him and limit his value in trade. I also specifically said multiple times "if he puts together a healthy season, his value clearly rises a ton and we can discuss it then"

That Jakob has missed time for health? Yes.

Poeltl on dealing with back injury: "It wasn't easy, tried to stay positive through tough times. Did some work with our mental health team ... those times weren't easy for me, because I didn't have a clear timeline .. I would've liked to play more this season."

Sure, he's completely over the back injury forever and ever. But it will affect his mental health the rest of his career. Those don't conflict in any way.

I think that this where the issues with a lot of guys come from. With the way that the league has changed over the last few years with the new CBA player value compared to pay is kind of out of wack, and the league has been rectifiying it the last 2 seasons. From what I gather this is what the maximum should be for a starting lineup, and ideally the team spends less per player in order to actually compete.

1st option $50-55ish million
2nd option no more than$40 million
3rd option no more than $30 million
4th option no more than $25 million
5th option no more than $20 million

IF you pay your starting lineup like this then you are already over the cap before signing any reserves. This is why guys like Sabonis, Lavine and Monk are all over paid for what they bring to the table. Sabonis and lavine are paid like first options but they are clearly 2nd options at best. Monk is a 6th man and paid like the 4th best starter.

Poeltl is worse because he will soon be paid like your 3rd best player but he is likely the 5th best and he has a bad back, making him much worse than his salary indicates.

It's why the pistons are at a stalemate with Jalen Duren. They know if they pay him like he is a 1st or 2nd option then their team will not be competing for championships. He needs to be paid like a 3rd option so that they can spend more money on a secondary scorer/ball handler. Meaning that if a team is being responsible with their salary cap a guy like Duren tops out at 35 million and the team can remain competitive.

Paying a guy like Poeltl nearly $30 million per season is a recipe for losing in the first round of the playoffs every year.

If you're gonna make stuff up and then defend against that point...

I'm not making stuff up. You're accusing Jakob Poeltl himself of lying about having had a back issue.

Are you saying that Poeltl is a bad player who isn't starting caliber and shouldn't be paid like a starter?

I haven't said anything of the sort! You're just making stuff up completely here!

How much do you think starters should be paid? Once you figure out the answer to that question you'll see why you're wrong here.

Again, I didn't say he's not a starter! I said he has health questions that limit him and limit his value in trade. I also specifically said multiple times "if he puts together a healthy season, his value clearly rises a ton and we can discuss it then"

Do you read the articles you're linking? LOL

That Jakob has missed time for health? Yes.

“It felt good, early on it was more of an issue, but at the end it was fine,” is what Poeltl said  and you're deriving that he has an ongoing problem. Niceeeeee.

Poeltl on dealing with back injury: "It wasn't easy, tried to stay positive through tough times. Did some work with our mental health team ... those times weren't easy for me, because I didn't have a clear timeline .. I would've liked to play more this season."

I would’ve liked to play more this season, it’s something I’ll have to continue working on the rest of my career” said Poeltl on how the injury affected his mental health.

Sure, he's completely over the back injury forever and ever. But it will affect his mental health the rest of his career. Those don't conflict in any way.

Whatever their play and league status dictate they can earn.

A good indicator of that is BPM. Poeltl isn't severely overpaid by that metric. Especially if you add context to how and why he got that contract.

Ok. He was extended in July of 2025 based off of his previous play and health status at the time. As time changes all, can we agree that the situation may be different at this moment than it was in July of 2025?

If he wasn't extended a full year early (realistically 2 seasons, as he exercised his option as part of the deal), what would a possible extension have looked this offseason in July of 2026? Based off his play and health status from this past season, do you think they would agree on an opt in and extend of 3 new years at roughly $28m per season? Or would it be shorter? Or less money? Or would they have maybe even agreed to hold off until later in the season to see how his health responds?

His health is fine. He was a part of the best line ups they had in the playoffs. His worth is pretty close to Zubac who will sign a similar contract to Poeltl in the near future.

Ok. If you say so. Surprised that Poeltl couldn't be traded at all last season despite being heavily shopped, though. And wasn't even being discussed for anywhere near what Zubac got. :dontknow:
