And paying DD not to play for them.

We can go hur dur those guys suck, but it was still a cost they had to pay in part because of an extension that should have never been offered. I hate to get on my soap box, but this idea we can't lose guys we drafted for nothing after their rookie deals is one of the dumbest. Its the most common mistake franchises make--extending their own draft picks to deals that immediately are upside down. Now you have non-difference makers clogging up your cap. Kings would be better off without him and his contract. Period.

The Kings shopped DD all of last season, shopped him again this summer as an expiring before they cut him, and he just signed with the Nuggets for minimal money in August after waiting for a market than never materialized. They shopped LaVine all last season and again this summer. He's still on roster. The Kings would've been better off never trading for DD or LaVine at all. They played both all of last season while Murray rehabbed and won 22 games.

The Kings would've been better off keeping Hailburton and trading Fox a season earlier.

They would've been better off not overpaying Schroder and Monk to add to the most ill-fitting roster in NBA. That collection of moves is what lead them to being a dumpster fire and the reason their former GM is gone.

All Murray did was cost them cap space going forward and this is the first year of his extension. Blaming him seems very, very off.

Huh?

I didn't blame him as the reason they suck. Or say he was the only mistake they made. All that other stuff is off-topic. His deal is bad. Based on his play. You think he's worth it somehow. Good luck to you and the Kings with that. No idea why we are talking about this other stuff or attempting to assign positions to me I never took. Weird.

In isolation I would rather not have his contract than have it but kings got really unlucky. His improvement has plateaued hard. Maybe he will improve again.

I disagree about bad luck. I thought it was a horrific extension in real-time when they gave it. I think a lot of us did. He hadn't shown near enough to make that big of a bet on him. Again, if we just look at his career, it all comes down to a bunch of made 3's as a rookie. That's it. And his shooting has just gone down every year. The rest of his game hasn't grown to replace it. It was a clear mistake to extend him. Not bad luck, terrible decision making by the front office.

We as fans look at rookie seasons of Tyreke Evans or Michael Carter-Willilams or Free Roddy B and we hold on to that hope for years later because we remember what a steal we thought we had. Front offices have to be smarter than that and look at the years of evidence that say this guy is JAG and we shouldn't hand him a giant bag.

It was a bad extension but if he had improved even incrementally or marginally it wouldn’t be on the bad contract list. But because he got worse, that extension that looks bad looks worse.

Now realistically could he have improved if he was drafted elsewhere ?

I'm still going optimistic about a Murray turnaround, but barring massive improvement I still expect his value to be upside down. His situation is more confirmation that unless it’s a no-brainer extension — a clear max guy or a clear team-friendly deal — it's far better to let guys on rookie contracts go to RFA. I continue to pre-dread the bloated contract that I expect the Jazz may offer Keyonte George.

Pat Williams has never had a good year. He's never had an entire season where he's been a plus defender, shot above league average from 3, or been above average at a single NBA skill. He also has motor issues.

This seem like an unfair comp. All Murray has to do is shoot league average or better from 3 this year and his contract will be fine.

Patrick williams shot 40% from 3 (albeit only 3.5 attempts/game) in 22-23 and 23-24. Tanked after getting his extension though

As a Laker fan, this whole Kuminga thing needs to end soon, not worried if Lakers get him or not, just hope it's not what he wants in terms of $$$
My Lakers Team Incoming

Starters: Kessler, Ziaire, Grimes, Reaves, Luka
Bench:Sexton, Mamu, Thiero, Carr, Thybulle, Looney, Vando, Laravia, Hardy, Knecht

1 or 2 more moves needed

I can't imagine it's anywhere close to what Kunminga wants. LAL probably have to fine a taker for LaRavia - which probably requires a 2nd (or 2 if they're really poor 2nds) but I'm not sure the Lakers have even that much in draft assets to trade. Then the salary would be limited to what LaRavia makes (and I guess a moderate amount more).

And a S&T requires the contract to be at least 3 years. He won’t want to take a low deal for that long. He’d believe that he’s be better off taking a 1 year min and trying to rehab his value.

If he doesn't want a 3 year deal in the $6-10M/yr range and would rather just take a min salary deal he might as well sign with Minny right now.

With Sharp out for 6 months and given that Portland is sitting comfortably under the first apron, they have access to the full Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception (valued at roughly $13 million to $14 million for the 2026–27 season) and could offer Kuminga a one-yr deal at that amount if he wants a one-yr "prove it" deal.

I have doubts regarding Kuminga and whether he can fit into a team system. Assuming Lakers can send off Hardy+SRP to a 3rd team they could potentially sign Kuminga to a near 3/$40 mil type s&t deal with the first year salary at $12.2 mil. He would still be 26 at the end of the 3 years. His agent would be a complete idiot to decline that deal (assuming it's even out there at this point).

That's a huge question and probably not, however they are currently 8.3 mil below the tax and could create extra space by waiving a few players that currently do not have guaranteed contracts like Kreji/Sochan/Potter who avg roughly 2.5 mil each for next yr

LAL could offer Kuminga ~2x of what they send out.

LaRivia makes $6M, so Kuminga could S&T for just under $12M.

Portland could use a PF, and I would happily take on LaRivia for free. We could send a fake second (or draft rights to a guy in Europe) to ATL to complete the deal.

Kuminga ($11.9M / $12.9M / $13.9M) -> LAL
LaRivia ($6M expiring) -> POR
Draft rights to Ante Tomic & TPE -> ATL
_________________________

Ideally LAL would be willing to include Thiero as well, and Portland would send back a 2nd.

This would allow Kuminga to get a bigger payday.

Kuminga ($16.2M / $17.5M / $18.8M) + 2nd '26 (MIN via POR) -> LAL
LaRivia ($6M expiring) + Thiero ($2.1M / $2.5M) -> POR
Draft rights to Ante Tomic & TPE -> ATL

Nope.
Portland has ~$8.5M under the tax. That is the max budget.

They are 8.3M with 14 players. That does not include Sochan.

IF Portland only carries 14 players thorough the season -> then they can waive Potter and get to ~$11M under the tax. But I don't think Portland has carried only 14 players throughout the season in the last decade.... so it's unlikely to happen.

Waiving anyone additional (Krejci) comes with a minimum salary cap hold to maintain the 14 players roster.... so you only gain $0.2M +/- of space (ie - the juice isn't worth the squeeze).
