Don't know about him but if my memmory serves me right, I think his son Colby Karl had cancer?

yep his son Coby went through thyroid cancer during his college career and still managed to make the Lakers. nene has the perfect coach to help him through this.

there really isn't much to say on the issue. Some people might want to post a "get well soon" or "my condolences" type of message but most of us understand the pointlessness of such a gesture.

(in fact calling it "pointless" might be generous, a cynic would see it more of a self-congratulatory "hey everyone, look how caring I am. I am publicly sending best wishes to someone who will never read this. Somehow this makes me better than you.")

Edit: That's a little harsh perhaps, most people are well-intentioned in their comments and obviously it is a sad story. I was mainly reacting to the "I'm one of the only ones that sees this as big news" nonsense above.

as a health care professional, i am astonished and disturbed by the level of ignorance of some posters.

1) cancer is cancer. some are worse than others and, while prostate cancer treatable with a relatively positive prognosis, it can also be fatal
2) "taking your chances" and not getting a prostate exam? all i can say is that i hope you don't have any dependents or plan on having any dependents

for those who passed kind wishes to Nene and didn't say something stupid (i.e. NBA should ban steroids, thus stating that Nene is/was a steroid user and there is a clear correlation to his steroid use and his cancer), keep it up with your kind words. I'm sure that Nene appreciates any warm regards sent his way.

I can't say there is a clear correlation between his cancer and an hypotetic steroid use, but - as about Mourning's health issue - I would not exclude it.

I eventually hope Nene will be able to get well asap.

QFT

Good luck to Nene.

I had a coworker diagnosed with prostate cancer. By the time he decided to go see a doctor, it had spread to his lower intestinal tract. They took out his lower intestinal tract, he went through chemo and it took him about 8 months to recover. He's back to work now but, I wouldn't wish anything like that on my worst enemy. Also, he needs to carry a colostomy bag around with him at all times, not pretty.

This kind of situation gets me mad of the term "team cancer"... I hate that... Cancer is no joke, and should not be used out of context no matter what someone is trying to say...

I was curious about your comment on it sucking so I googled it... Its safe to say I will take my chances....

That's the dumbest thing you can possibly do. It's not a big deal, just like getting scanned for colorectal cancer is no big deal. Let me tell you from experience, that the basic check for prostate cancer - the digital-rectal exam or the PSA test - is nothing like having a biopsy done. The digital-rectal exam gives comedians a lot of material for jokes, but I bet none of them have had a biopsy.

Well, when I was searching I read on a couple of sites that if you don't have a history in your family, you don't have the symptons mentioned, and you're not over 50, you don't have much to worry about.. I dunno about Nene's case but I don't fit those categories...

I go for regular checkups, but I don't overdo it...Its not just prostate cancer, there's many other types of diseases and conditions they tell you to check out... The reality is its hard to take a test for every condition known to man.. I understand the dangers of it but at the same time I'm not going to be paranoid and go to a doctors office every other day testing myself... I'll die when I'm supposed to die, I'm not going to waste my time worrying about it...

as a Denver fan, id like to thank you guys. You're class acts.

obviously Nene will never be Bosh (or even come close), but he played at an allstar level last year when he was healthy and now he has to face this. But i dont even care about the division right now. We want him healthy first and foremost. He's really popular here with the fans and the children. Nice guy.

here's hoping that Toronto stays healthy at least.

was going to not comment on your post, but i had to. and i will try to bite my tongue as much as possible so i don't come across as being overly rude.

you've contradicted yourself. if you are going to "die when you are supposed to die", why even go see a physician? why wash out an open cut or apply Polysporin? hey, if your time is up, then don't stand in your Maker's way.

and you talk as if you are running these tests on yourself, and physicians aren't sending STANDARD requisitions to labs and nurses aren't drawing the blood. if you are taking your own PSA levels, among other CBC lab results, i commend you.

and please tell me about these other "diseases and conditions" they check you for during your exams. Dengue fever? Tourette's? You must see an interesting physician.

A prostate exam is a standand part of a middle-aged male's physical. I almost feel like its Peter Griffin posting here.
