No we couldn't Dav...the salary cap rules wouldn't allow it. You can't offer a contract to a free agent that will make the team exceed the salary cap...right now around 56 million dollars. Currently we sit at 54 million and will only lose Harrington's 2 million deal.
56-52 is only 4 million dollars available. Nothing to do about the Bobcats being cheap.
The league also put into place this thing called a "cap hold" which keeps teams from signing FAs and then signing their own players. Until he's either signed or renounced Mek should count for about 10 million next year (which could take away the 4 million I just said we would have...haven't crunched anything).
It is possible to trade for expirings, but the team taking on the longer contracts will most surely want compensation.*

Why should it matter where he lives, where he practices and who he's great friends with? Nobody cares about that. What matters is, can he help us win games, what will it take to bring him here and will he be a good fit next to Crash.
If he's willing to take a significant cut in pay because of those things then it means everything. One could argue whether he'd be a good fit, but getting a 20/10 player who's also known as a stand up guy and a gymrat for the MLE is pretty much a no brainer.
