you won't pry Smith out of the Bulls' hands unless you can give the Bulls an upgrade at the big man department, especially on the offensive end
In a larger deal with Bulls using Smith as a filler to get someone like Gasol, you may be able to take advantage and as a 3rd/4th team in the deal snap Smith for your expirings
but for a straight up trade with the Bulls, you have to do better than this to get Joe Smith

They're not out of the mix by any means to be honest.
But still, I don't see any real incentive here. It's not like Smith and Griffin are bad contracts that would stop a Gasol deal from happening. Next season they will be expiring contracts. If there is a Grizz-Bulls deal strike a deal I seriously doubt that Smith's one year deal will prevent a trade.
Honestly, this deal looks more like the Bulls are really bad so lets make the Magic better type of deal. There needs to be a clear advantage to the Bulls doing this.

He is old and they are bad. So, no, he doesn't. He is making a bad team better and taking time away from 2 young bigs. He is counter productive.
Yeah, trading him may in the end be for the best if it means that Thomas and Noah develop because of it, but that doesn't mean they're going to do Orlando any favors.
Smith has been nothing short of awesome this season. They're not in a hurry to trade him. He definitely has value. Go to the Bulls board and post this trade.

Then they can just bench him. He has only one more year than Garrity, whom they would also be benching. Chicago can either get a better return for him now than Garrity, or include him in a helpful package next year when he's an expiring.

Unless, like is being reported, they are looking to package now. If this is the case then Garrity's (or any) expiring would be much more valuable to the Griz in a Gasol deal than an aging vetarn they have no place for.

Why? Let's assume that a trade goes down at the deadline. If that happens, then Smith will have value as an expiring contract the next season. Garrity's value would only be that it comes off of the books. You've given no real incentive for why the Bulls should make this deal other than it may make for a slightly more attractive offer to the Grizzlies. That's not a very strong reason. If the Bulls and Grizzlies decide to make a trade I find it very difficult to believe that Joe Smith will be the reason that it won't happen.

Well, then, you might want to present this as part of a 3-way deal for Gasol. Because as it stands right now they're giving away a useful vet for Pat Garrity.
