Well, let's assume that Kidd is demanding a trade to a *contender*.
This would--while not considering team makeup after a trade--include Detroit (Chauncey's going nowhere), Boston (not enough talent to acquire Kidd), and Orlando (perhaps) in the East.
Perhaps Kidd would propel Cleveland (in dire need of a point guard not named Boobie), Washington (needs a PG now, but what would happen to Arenas?), and Toronto (healthy TJ Ford and Calderon are all they need) to top 3-4 seed status, but I can't see Kidd's addition to any Eastern team boosting them to Boston, or us, for that matter.
The only trade that *could* work would be an inactive/injured Arenas/Etan Thomas-Kidd trade. Washington would not have to worry about Arenas opting-out and assessing his current market value and would have Kidd/Stevenson/Butler/Jamison/Haywood with a bench of Mason/Daniels/Young/Blatche/Songaila and a deep bench of McGuire and Pecherov. They would have room for three more FA's, if they chose to go that route. New Jersey's season is a waste, anyway, and this could just be considered a salary dump of a malcontent
Out West? Let's just look at every playoff team, then, for the 9th seed, Golden State, has a winning percentage of 58.7%
Utah? Deron Williams is going nowhere.
Portland COULD use Jason Kidd and should try to get it done. Starting PG experiments involving Jarrett Jack/Steve Blake/Brandon Roy haven't stuck, and Sergio Rodriguez/Taurean Green are not the answer, either. As long as Roy/Aldrige/Oden remain Trailblazers post-trade, this could be a VERY viable option.
Denver also needs a starting PG with Chucky Atkins out and ANTHONY CARTER starting. I simply don't see how one basketball could be enough between Allen Iverson/Carmelo Anthony/Jason Kidd. Rebounding is also not a necessity on this Nuggets squad, arguably Kidd's biggest strength. However, Kenyon Martin and Marcus Camby are bigman finishers that Kidd could work with.
Phoenix has Steve Nash.
The Lakers...would Jason Kidd thrive in a triange offense? I think not. Most Phil Jackson teams have had the PG serve a complementary role off-the-ball. Kobe would still demand the ball every possession and Lamar Odom's point-forward ability would go to waste. I don't think Kidd is the missing piece, here, but they certainly have the assets to pull off the trade.
Golden State has Baron Davis and he's perfect for them. They could move Davis to the SG and have him as an off-ball chucker, but I doubt it.
New Orleans has Chris Paul.
San Antonio has Tony Parker. While in the past they considered signing Kidd foremost and dealing with Parker secondly, I think Tony's breakout has changed that line of thinking.
Dallas could pull off this trade if they've determined that the Harris/Terry backcourt isn't working. Jason Kidd would be perfect in exactly this tempo of offense, IMO. I already provided a trade suggestion.
What say you?
