I really don't understand people who think that. He does ONE thing well: get into the passing lanes. He does not contest jumpshots, block shots, rebound, get back on defense to stop the transition, take charges in order to protect the paint, play within a set scheme, stay in front of his man. He's small, light, and expending a ton of energy on offense. And if he wasn't all those things, he still wouldn't be a good defender because he wants the steal more than he wants the missed shot.

I don't know about all of that, he grabbed 6 boards tonight and went into the paint to grab a few. On most nights I would agree with you though. But you could replace him with Chucky Atkins. Hell, Atkins should be number 1 on the list.

I think Vladimir Radmanovic deserves a honorable mention here.

Sorry Miller, I edited your post, meant only to quote it, fixed . . . what I had to say in answer was:

Still the Wiz are only 20th out of 30 and with Gil out to remove one defensive liability and focus the rest who can't depend on Gil to bail them out. I wouldn't say they "get it" yet but they are better, at least until Gil returns.

Well, we are still an improving defensive team. As you can see, we have nights when our defense is "ON" (ie: against Boston twice, Dallas, Utah the other night, etc) and others where we just don't get pumped up enough (ie: against Toronto, Memphis, etc).

But when we want to, you can see we play fundamentally sound D. Heck, about 5-7 games ago, we ranked 14th in defensive efficiency (aka sightly above average). We've recently hit a stretch of playing little defense, though. Part of this can be attributed to not getting pumped up enough, it can also be attributed to us not having the depth that would give our players enough rest.

Ah, slightly above average defensive play . . . the nirvana for true Wizards fans.

I only included guys who have been healthy, and have played a lot, 25 minutes or over. Atkins was both hurt, and is a bench roleplayer.

There's no point in listing 17 minute-a-game liabilities. Sure, they're awful, but do they, playing against the other scrubs, decide the outcome of a game? No. Its the big-part players who are really weak defensively that a- create a bad defensive team, and b- lose games on that end.

Nash is much worst than Iverson. At least AI goes for steals. Nash doesn't do a thing, it's like no one is there.

Nash draws charges, doesn't gamble, and stays in front of his man (when he can). I'm not saying he's better or worse than AI, I'm saying he does something.

Nash gets a deserved bum rap, but AI rarely gets his share of the criticism.

Some guys like Larry Huges and Stromile Swift are terrible, but have one thing that they do well defensively. I'm going to try and keep my list to guys that do absolutely nothing well and basically just wait to get the pumpkin back.

1.) Troy Murphy
2.) Jamaal Tinsley
3.) Mo Williams
4.) Mike Bibby
5.) Drew Gooden
6.) Eddy Curry
7.) Brian Cook
8.) Zach Randolph
9.) Dirk Nowitzki
10.) Steve Nash
11.) Al Harrington
12.) Stephon Marbury
13.) Carlos Boozer
14.) Antoine Walker
15.) Andrea Bargnani
