Is Bryan Colangelo building the team the wrong way?

Post#1 » by KG1585 » Fri Feb 8, 2008 8:43 pm

The relevance here for Raptors fans is that they play a style that at least echoes the Suns. They don't play at the same pace as they like to make sure Bosh gets his touches in the half-court, but they were built by Bryan Colangelo with an eye toward the efficiency of good three-point shooting and the possibilities of a diverse, skilled line-up in a period when the rules seem to favour slashing and ball movement more than simply pounding it into the post and waiting around.

The suns have given up playing the fast break basketball, and got a traditional centre. While the Raps never played as the same pace as the suns, it could be argued that Bryan is trying to build the team similar to the suns, with deadly three point shooting. Is this the wrong way to go?

I think we tried that for the first 10 games last year and we were 2-8

With jose out there we are a half court team and with TJ we push the ball but we are nothing like the suns.
The raptors can never win a championship because the refs wont let us...…... Unless a miracle trade happens. :D

I know I hate the fact that most of our players can actually make jumpshots.

I agree, it gets painful watching shot after shot go in.

I'll tell you this...the mere fact that Colangelo was able to make this team a 47 win team (with a little help from Embry and Babs) after Babcock had a couple more lottery years in the plans is impressive. No Raptor fan can deny that Colangelo has done a fantastic job. Bargnani may be a bust, and Kapono may not be worth what we paid...but Colangelo is making us winners. Right now we're built for the future...there's no scripted plan. We have our pieces in place and they're going to make decisions. I still have my trust in Colangelo until we slow down and stop winning. As of now every decision he has made--is a step towards a chamionship and until I see him taking steps away from that goal, whatever he does--goes.

The problem is, what if they stop going in like the Bulls shots did.

Let's not forget the huge concern we have with them also being multi-dimensional unselfish players... I wish he followed the Zeke model.

I Agree if people actually watch our games (in full) they would see that we play nothing like the Suns at all.

The problem is - Paxson is paying Ben Wallace 15 mil a year and Hinrich was sucking. They are not as much of a shooting team as ours - look how many snipers we have and point out the last time Chicago had as many pure shooters? How many players last season did they have in the top 5 3pt %?

We are a little over a season and a half into "rebuilding" for goodness sake!

People are expecting WAY to much WAY to fast,

Does no one remember how bad we used to be?

I've often said that this team was bult similar to the Suns only to be disputed on here. We don't run as often by choice, but the talent is/was similar in the style of roster up until the Shaq trade.

They key to whether this works or not is if Bosh and Bargs can defend and rebound solidly against the best sets of bigs in 2 or 3 years. Thats been the downfall of every other great offense-first team for the last 10 years in the playoffs. It's too early to tell but you have to wait for it to fail before writing the idea off, even if it does fail you can always flip Bosh or Bargs down the road for a big that would help in the defensive/rebounding mold. It's worth a try though for now.

I completely agree that you need to be able to have guys that can get to the rim, which I am sure you are inferring, but I think it's idiotic when people knock the fact that we like to acquire guys that can actually shoot the ball.

"Soft Jumpshooting team."
"Get Kapono more shots."

Raptors only run one play which is desingned to get a jumpshot up, Parker's curl to the middle. Everything else is to get either Bosh or Jose to the lane. Raps are just capable punishing defense for collapsing, and sometimes that leads to very beautiful basketball.

For the past year or 2, I've been getting the feeling that BC was trying to replicate the Suns with the Raptors, and have always thought it wasn't the right direction. That's the reason he got Bargnani, a mobile 3 point shooting big man who could with the rest of the team, who is also very athletic. Our superstar, Bosh, is also very mobile but isn't all that powerful when compared to the Amares, Garnetts, Duncans, Bynums, Boozers.
Wasn't that the reason he passed on Aldridge for Bargnani?

Werd, expectations are way too high.

Exactly...thats the difference. The Bulls have no to dump the ball into and go the stripe. We do. Thats the difference there. When are shot is not falling we have other means. The Bulls dont.

Last time I checked we already had a star PF hence no need for Aldridge.

all joking aside, time will tell if Kerr made the right decision...
He had the most entertaining team to watch, which I'm afraid will have to play a slowdown, boring position style to accommodate Shaq.

At first sight I don't see present Shaq>Marion on contributing to the team success.

And, back to the OP, no worries, BC was the best thing that could've happened to the formally lowly Raps. If the Shaq experiment works great, nothing could stop BC to try & go the same route.
It is more then half way battle to get character shooters players.
