richboy, I tend to think of the denominations, other than point guard which is more stylistic, as based more on defensive assignment. The 1 guards the smallest guy in the game, the 5 the tallest, etc.
As for skills, talent, size tends to come with a certain package . . . when it doesn't it can be very special if the person is unusually talented (Dirk, Magic, etc.) or hurt them (innumberable tweeners with post games and wing size).
The reason the PG position is different is because the extra assignment of bringing the ball up and setting up the offense seems to attract a certain type of player some of whom, Oscar/Magic/young Penny, had forward size.
