He hasn't had a great year by any stretch, but I think some of the Carter hate has been excessive this year. He's still averaging 20-5-5 a game and his shooting percentage is in line with his career totals. He hasn't shown quite the explosiveness in the past, but it's believed he's been bothered by an ankle injury for most of the year.
Does Vince have a great contract? No. But I think his demise has been exaggerated.
Regardless there's another scenario to consider. Right now New Jersey is going to be at 52m for next season. You acquire expirings for Vince Carter and you're not only ready to make a big offer, but in fact a max offer to a certain player.
If I'm Rod Thorn I trade Carter and even a young player like Boone as much as it hurts just to get back a couple 1sts and expirings from Orlando.
expirings, 2008 1st, 2010 1st
for
Carter, Boone
Why would I do that? Boone and Sean Williams share a position alongside Kristic. It's not a major loss. The trimming of Carter's massive deal basically brings in whoever the Nets want at SG. The draft pick will improve, the age of the team, the chemistry can be rebuilt, and three first round picks will attack any depth problems.
PG- Harris
SG- Igoudala
SF- Jefferson
PF- Kristic
C- Sean Williams
Plus three firsts
Note there are better players than Igoudala available even.
