Veteran center Jamaal Magloire will be signed by the Dallas Mavericks after he clears waivers at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The 6-11 former Kentucky standout has agreed to sign a one-year contract for the veteran's minimum salary of slightly over $1 million, NBA sources said Tuesday afternoon.
Magloire was waived by the New Jersey Nets on Friday and should be in uniform when the Mavericks visit San Antonio on Thursday. Although he played sparingly for the Nets, Magloire as recently as 2005-06 was a full-time starter and averaged better than nine points and nine rebounds per game while playing for Milwaukee.
The Mavericks developed a need for a backup big man behind Erick Dampier when DeSagana Diop was included in the trade for Jason Kidd.
The Mavericks still have one roster spot open and are holding that open in case either Brent Barry or Sam Cassell agree to join them.

I recall asking the Cavs fans for an honest evaluation and hearing how he was the single worst player in the entire NBA. It's funny how once a player leaves a team the fans immediately lower thier evaluation of the player.
We will see how Avery Johnson uses Magloire before we declare him a complete bust.

We need a backup center, not a starter. There won't be any problem with Dampier taking minutes away from him. That's what no one seems to be understanding.
Magloire in no way has to be as good as Diop. The way you have to look at it is Magloire > playing Juwan, Malik, or Bass out of position at center.
If he plays like crap he'll probably be better than those guys just because he's a true center. If he returns to form then we've got a steal and a great backup.

The Mavericks filled a need for a true backup center Tuesday by signing free agent Jamaal Magloire, a former All-Star waived by New Jersey last week.
Magloire (6-11, 265) will practice with the Mavs on Wednesday and be available for Thursday night
