That's all we are asking. If the two can avg 46 MPG with those number, I'll be real happy. I mean, 13.6 PPG, 13.5 RPG, 1.9 BPG on 55+ shooting is fine with me from the 5th scoring position. And we have 12 fouls for Shaq, Duncan, the Nuggets' frontcourt and the Lakers' frontcourt.

Veteran center Jamaal Magloire will be signed by the Dallas Mavericks after he clears waivers at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The 6-11 former Kentucky standout has agreed to sign a one-year contract for the veteran's minimum salary of slightly over $1 million, NBA sources said Tuesday afternoon.

Magloire was waived by the New Jersey Nets on Friday and should be in uniform when the Mavericks visit San Antonio on Thursday. Although he played sparingly for the Nets, Magloire as recently as 2005-06 was a full-time starter and averaged better than nine points and nine rebounds per game while playing for Milwaukee.

The Mavericks developed a need for a backup big man behind Erick Dampier when DeSagana Diop was included in the trade for Jason Kidd.

The Mavericks still have one roster spot open and are holding that open in case either Brent Barry or Sam Cassell agree to join them.

No one expects Magloire to be anything but a backup C. He's just there to spell Damp so we don't only have one C who could foul out quickly.

At worst, he's a big body that gives us 6 fouls and a decent showing now and then

At best, he can rebound and score for us some as well.

And that's what we'll take and go from there.

Understandably suspicious :)

No, just a proud Torontonian, and an admittedly biased fan.

I recall asking the Cavs fans for an honest evaluation and hearing how he was the single worst player in the entire NBA. It's funny how once a player leaves a team the fans immediately lower thier evaluation of the player.

We will see how Avery Johnson uses Magloire before we declare him a complete bust.

Diop was, from their point of view.. and it was true (bear in mind he was a lottery pick). He was horrible.

In Dallas, he was given the opportunity to play to a role.

He has noticeably failed to overcome any of his major weaknesses. He's as foul-prone as he ever was, he's not blocking shots any more effectively than he did in Cleveland, he's still a bad FT shooter and can't do anything on offense besides dunk and catch oops.

But for Dallas, who only needs him for 15, 20 minutes a game and for 6 fouls and some decent post D, that's fine. They let him play his minutes and he does his job.

Magloire? Magloire's best season was a contract year and he's declined since. Not just in raw averages, either; Diop has been consistent per minute and has actually seen some relatively steady improvement as a rebounder.

Magloire has gotten MORE foul-prone, dropped off in his help defense numbers, declined as a passer, declined in his ability to draw fouls, declined in scoring efficiency, NOTICEABLY increased his turnover rate...

There is the possibility that he'll do for you what Diop did, only with a lot less effectiveness as a shot-blocker... which means he's a downgrade.

This is only a good move if he matches Diop's production and given his incredible failure in New Jersey, it seems unlikely that he's going to give you all that much, especially when he's guaranteed not to play significant minutes on account of Dampier.

EDIT: On the plus side, the Kidd comment is a good one; Magloire DOES have good hands and he can still dunk when he's open, so he may have more value offensively than Diop, not that this represents a problem for Dallas in the first place.

We need a backup center, not a starter. There won't be any problem with Dampier taking minutes away from him. That's what no one seems to be understanding.

Magloire in no way has to be as good as Diop. The way you have to look at it is Magloire > playing Juwan, Malik, or Bass out of position at center. If he plays like crap he'll probably be better than those guys just because he's a true center. If he returns to form then we've got a steal and a great backup.

He was being pressured to play a princeton offense in NJ and that has the center getting involved outside the post which is dumb for most real center types and even a Dirk type as we learned last year. This guy was being used the wrong way by clueless coaches who have yet to prove anything as well and he won't have that problem in Dallas behind a similar center (dampier) that we have seemingly resurrected because of the same Jason Kidd who has Damp acting like a schoolgirl with a crush and looking to perform for a team that was all but ready to rid themself of him as a part of the trade that sent Diop away. Thank You NJ for the trophy.

He played with Kidd in NJ AND looked awful , even at the beginning of the season before Kidd decided to sabotage the Nets .

Alright already! We get it! You think he sucks! Lucky you! Your team cut him!

Feel free to come back and stick your tongue out at us if he comes here and is a complete bust. That'll be just fine. Believe me, it won't take much at all for us to be pleased with him. A few minutes here, a couple of rebounds there, an occasional point or two, we'll be pretty happy. If he's a bust, he cost us a few hundred grand and he won't play much.

What is the big deal?!

Look dude, you've told us about 10 times already that he sucked in NJ. Everyone here understands that. And no, we do not expect much out of him expect to be an average backup center. Please get that through your head. You can quit repeating yourself over and over and over now because we keep giving you the same answers.

Thanks and goodbye.

Magloire has always been overrated throughout his career. He was a sham all-star, drifted far too often in the perimeter instead of using his mechanical low post moves, slow and plodding, and underachieved on defense. Is it because he's always been on loser teams? Maybe, but I wouldn't say it like it's a sure thing.

This is a great signing because a) it's cheap, b) he's only here to replace Diop who was a DNP/spot-up minutes guy this season anyway, and c) anything is better than Juwan Howard. That's not a hard criteria to meet.

No, I understand that, I just wanted to clarify what it is you're signing.

Magloire in no way has to be as good as Diop. The way you have to look at it is Magloire > playing Juwan, Malik, or Bass out of position at center.

And I'm debating the veracity of that statement; it may NOT be true.

If he plays like crap he'll probably be better than those guys just because he's a true center. If he returns to form then we've got a steal and a great backup.

I'm inclined to disagree, because he's really not very good at anything besides being a solid to good rebounder most years.

If he's worse than Diop, then you're really not much better off than you are now, that much is clear. I hope Kidd will help re-inflate his presently unacceptable level of scoring efficiency but in general, I'm not really confident that this was a wise move. I think signing Loren Woods out of the D-League would have been more effective, personally.

Done Deal

http://www.nba.com/mavericks/news/Notebook_022608.html

The Mavericks filled a need for a true backup center Tuesday by signing free agent Jamaal Magloire, a former All-Star waived by New Jersey last week.

Magloire (6-11, 265) will practice with the Mavs on Wednesday and be available for Thursday night
