Franchise players are basically players who the team builds around and advertises like crazy. There are only a hand full of them in the league. Not in any real order.
Lebron- Cle
Kobe- Lal
Duncan-Sa
Garnett- Bos
Paul- Noh
Wade-Mia
Dirk- Dal
Bosh- Tor
D. Howard- Orl
Maybe Baron Davis- Gs
Then you have teams who don't have one, but two:
Det- Billups/Hamilton
Utah- Williams/Boozer
Phx- Nash/Amare
Den-Iverson/Anthony
Hou- McGrady/Yao
Thats it really. Wash has three players, who after season, I can't really put any over the other and the rest of the teams don't really have anyone who is a true franchise player/

Pretty good list, except Nash is 2nd tier, and I cannot believe Yao is not on that list and on the first tier.
Dwight Howard is also a true franchise player, really weird that you left both those players off the list.
I'm sure you will get a lot of crap for stating the truth that Dirk isn't a franchise player, and neither is Wade.
IMO opinion franchise player is tossed around far too often, and there really are only a couple franchise players.
Yao
Kobe
Duncan
Paul
Lebron
and maybe KG and Williams.
these are the only players who by themselves could lead a team to the playoffs, everyone else needs a decent supporting cast.
you can be a great player, but franchise player gets tossed out far too often.

haha. Dirk has to be the most hated player on this board. People just don't like him for non-basketball reasons, but still have to undervalue him as a basketball player.
Maybe he should wear cornrows, rape a woman and fire guns, so he can get respected here.
Chris Paul hasn't even been in the playoffs but people already consider him more of a franchise player than someone who won MVP, was an All NBA 1st teamer, an NBA finalist and carried his team to the silver medal at the WC 2002 and EC 2004.
I know, you americans love your athletes, but Dirk is probably more of a franchise player right now than Paul ever will be.
My list:
DIRK !!!
Duncan
Kobe
Lebron
Nash
Yao
What these guys have in common is that they either have one move or one facet of their game that is unstoppable.
Dirk's jumpshot, Duncan's post game, Kobe's fadeaway, Lebron's finishing abilty, Steve Nash's pick and roll game, Yao's fadeaway.

All this is just my opinion. I'm not saying it's fact. Just calling it how i see it.
Franchise Players (in the sense you can build around as best player and probably win a Chip almost singlehandedly)
Kobe Bryant
Lebron James
Kevin Garnett
Tim Duncan
Dwight Howard
Dirk Nowitzki
Even though Point Guards usually never win chips as the best player on the team.
Chris Paul
Steve Nash
*Has beens = Shaq, Kidd,
Secondary Franchise Players (Can carry teams to decent/good records aren't going to win as the best/lone star player on the team.)
Ming
McGrady
Stoudamire
Gasol
R.Wallace
Pierce
Carter
Ray Allen
Gilbert Arenas
Allen Iverson
Baron Davis
Deron Williams
Elton Brand
Dirk Nowitzki
Carmelo Anthony
Carlos Boozer
Butler (still not totally sold on him yet though.)
C.Bosh
3rd Tier Star Players (In the right system can look like stars, aren't Franchise players.)
M.Redd
C.Billups
L.Deng
R.Hamilton
J.O'neil (was 2ndtier at one point)
J.Johnson
A.Jefferson
B.Roy
M.Ginobli
T.Parker
J.Howard
R.Lewis
E.Okafor
A.Iguodala
R.Gay
Hedo (don't ask me to spell his last name.)
And then there's everybody else the list is just too long.
