Gammons: Rios and AJ Trade

Post#1 » by jalenrose#5 » Tue May 27, 2008 8:26 pm

Gammons Blog

Maybe Minaya needs to blow something up, to do something such as trading Beltran, cash and pieces to a smaller media market and bringing back a package with Alex Rios and A.J. Burnett.

I just came across this, thought you guys might like to discuss this....I like the thought, but I really don't think Beltran solves our problems with runs scored...if it was Jose Reyes...then yes, this deal has to go down...haha

No thanks, from my perspective. It's not only Rios and Burnett for Beltran...it's Rios, Burnett, and the compensation we'll get if/when Burnett bolts. That's likely to be at least a sandwich round pick, and probably a first rounder plus the sandwich round pick.

Beltran is a terrific hitter, but he's not worth that much IMO.

No thanks, I think I'll stick with Rios.

Beltran is a big name and I like the idea of trading for him while his value is a bit depressed but this particular deal doesn't make a ton of sense for the Jays unless the other pieces they get back from the Mets are more significant.

That said, I'm not against trading AJ, especially if we start to fade as he'll likely opt out next season and I do think that Rios is overrated as a hitter. He's good but not great and with Vernon signed long term he's far less valuable as a RF than he would be playing CF.

Agreed, but I'd really like to see JP use the draft compensation rules to aid in the minor-league rebuild. Let guys like Burnett walk -- as he did with Catalanotto, Speier and Lilly -- rather than trade them, unless there are serious prospects being offered. Guys like Beltran would help, but I'd really rather that the team starts focusing on the future.

Although AJ has been up and down during his career, I don't make that trade.

Beltran earns $18.5 million annually from 2008 to 2011. Having him and Wells together would cripple this team. The only deal for Beltran that would make any sense is Wells for Beltran, but that's not likely.

I think that trading for minor leaguers where you can already see what you're getting is a much safer way to rebuild it than letting a guy walk just to get a sandwich pick. Especially with you-know-who doing the drafting.

As for the other 3? Cat wouldn't have brought back a significant piece of any kind, he wanted to resign Lilly so he didn't deal him and I think he made a mistake holding on to Speier. Either way, Burnett would bring back a much more significant bounty than any of those 3 players would have.

If teams are offering good prospects for Burnett, that's obviously the best option. I just worry that his contract, inconsistency, and injury woes will limit the offers that the Jays receive, and JP has not been a masterful wheeler and dealer...my biggest fear is that a Burnett trade would return a middling prospect and a stopgap at a current position of need.

I wouldn't deal Rios and A.J. for Beltran. Beltran is great but just too much money. To take back so much salary, Wells would have to be moving somewhere. I actually wouldn't mind seeing Wells dealt regardless.

The deal makes no sense for the Jays. Even Beltran for Rios is silly considering Rios is younger, cheaper and offers a higher ceiling in the next few years. Throwing in AJ Burnett (who is worth good prospects) makes no sense, unless we get the best prospets the Mets have to offer (something they won't do after paying such a steep price for Santana).

We're giving too much for Beltran. AJ and Rios>Beltran.

Those 2 are also crucial part of our team. IMO its all about guys getting there game to their peak. If that happens we're a dangerous team. Other wise we dont need to shake up anything that much.

Gammons was writing from the Mets point of view. Sure, they should try something like this. But this doesn't make any sense for us.

That sweetener would have to be Halladay for Mets to consider.

Beltran and Wells get similar salaries, but Beltran is much better...

you wouldnt have to add Halladay to get them to make a deal. Halladay currently is more valueble then Beltran himself. Beltran is a great player but he certainly doesnt look too great this season coming off that knee injury/surgery he had in the offseason.

if you offered them Wells/Mcgowan for Beltran they would prolly bite. Thats not to say I would even make that move because I think Beltran is starting to hit a decline and Mcgowan is going to be a hell of a pitcher in a few years.

Return to Toronto Blue Jays
