He's immature, inconsistent, not capable of playing particularly good defense at this point (he looks solid man to man at times, but if he isn't fully focused it can be brutal), and isn't going to blow by anyone with his first step/handle to get into the lane. What he can do right now is shoot the ball, particularly from deep, and coming off of screens. That's pretty valuable in the triangle, and he could be a pretty effective guy shooting open 3s and getting out in transition. For all the "attitude" problems that are brought up, they all go back to him losing focus too easily, he's a guy who's been genuinely liked by his teammates. He's a hard worker, but he looses focus too easily and gets distracted from his goals. With the right coach, the right system, and the right guys around him, he can be turned into a very effective shooter capable of scoring in a Rip Hamilton like style...but he's a bit of a project. I think he'd be a sound long term investment for the Lakers (of course I'm bias, but I don't say that about Gerald for every team...), and for the right now he can provide some shooting/spark scoring.
Lakers looking to add Newble or Green

the argument for green is this, and its all in the word "HOPE"
if the hope is that ariza and bynum and of course gasol return this year, that will be sufficient enough to take on any team on the inside and rebound.
if and when all of those 3 return, where does newble stand knowing that rony turiaf is already gonna get the bulk of the time, and he is more than sufficient to fill in after those 3?
newble goes back to the bench.
green therefore, should be taken and groomed for the long haul. long. lengthy. and can jump out of the building.

with the 10th pick in the 2005 nba draft the los angeles lakers select......gerald green.
i remember when mitch said there was someone in the draft that the lakers wanted to pick who they didn't want to be playing against in the future.
a lot of speculation at that point turned toward either bynum or green. thank goodness the lakers picked bynum
btw, how money was that statement by mitch

islander009 wrote:can someone tell me how green does defensively?I have not heard anything good about his defense. But with the lack of defense we really need that hardnose defender, either in the paint or out on the perimeter. newble from what i remember seeing of him, played kobe for most of the night when we played the cavs switching with lebron(then lebron took over at the end with the assignment). But if he is able to play decent defense against kobe i would be happy to have them on our team just to hold someone other wing out. anybody think getting a center on a 10 day is the right move right now?
When Green is a match physically with his opponent he can do a solid job man to man. Some of the best defense I've seen him play was against Kobe last year. That said, he gets out quicked far too easily by the Jamaal Crawfords of the world, and gets pushed around by the Paul Pierces, while his team defense is pretty poor.

Not that I'm going to argue that Green would have been a better player than Bynum had he been drafted by the Lakers (iI think Green may be in even worse shape now had he started off with LA) but I just want to use this opportunity to point out how much of a player's career is based on the situations they're put in. A lot of times people say "thank god we drafted player A over player B," but their career paths could be completely different depending on how they begin their careers. Guys like Joe Johnson were poorly utilized until they moved onto better situations, there's no telling how Joe's career would have unfolded had he been stuck in Boston with the lack of confidence he was displaying there. Bynum is a guy I've always been high on, but coming into the league I saw him as a guy who desperately needed to end up in the right situation, and he did. Gerald was the same way in my mind, and unfortunately for him he wasn't properly dealt with up to this point. Of course the majority of the blame is on Gerald's shoulders, but the way he's been handled can't be overlooked either.
(that was sort of rant-ish, sorry).

Meh, even a fully utilized Kwame doesn't have the hands or touch around the bucket to ever be the player people thought he was coming out of high school...the same way even a Gerald who reaches his potential won't be the Tracy McGrady people thought he could be. On top of that, I think Kwame genuinely doesn't care about the game, and is the type of guy who, had he been unable to secure a rookie contract, would have quit the game altogether. Gerald's work ethic has been questioned, but it isn't a matter of him being unwilling to do the work, but more a matter of him thinking he's better than he is. If Gerald is unable to catch onto a NBA team, I'd bet a large sum that he dedicates himself to trying to get back, something I personally don't think Kwame (or a guy like Stromile Swift) would do.

Thanks geraldgreen5 for the info on g. green. i do agree with you that it all depends on who is there to guide the rookies once they get into town. I have watched some of geralds games as a rookie has lots of potential but not the right mentors. I have stated this before when he was playing with minnesota that he should be under the lakers guidance so that he could better himself.
in any case i would swing for either player. i like the defensive minded newble but i do like the greens potential.
