Any thoughts on the Celtics young bigs Powe n Big Baby Davis

Post#1 » by Hemingway » Sun Apr 6, 2008 3:30 am

What are your thoughts on them? They are playing well but is it a case of just a great environment or are they going to be players in this league? Also what are some thoughts on Powe's market value in the off season.

Powe has a scorers mentality and if u watch the C's games...everytime he gets the ball he will go for a shot. He's a solid bench player in the NBA, but i dont think he will earn big bucks anywhere. They are a product of the system...opponents have to focus on the big three so leave guys like powe and baby open.

I was close to the court at the celtics vs. bobcats game tonight and actually specifically mentioned several times how impressed I was with the two young bigs.

They dispelled the "system" and "big three" argument (for one night at least) by playing very well with Ray, KG, and Pierce all out. Powe was aggressive going to the glass, showed good hands, and a solid post scoring ability. His defense was decent but didn't jump out at me as spectacular.

Davis showed some solid spin and hook moves, the typical bread and butter stuff we've seen since his college days. He's a big body to move from the block, but he will have to improve defensively.

If anything that tandems defensive shortcomings are being masked by the Celtics great team D. Regardless of that, i think they both have a future in the league and will at least be solid rotation players for years to come.

They're a little undersized height-wise but they give a little bit of what Indiana had in the early days of Dale/Antonio Davis maybe. (When they came off the bench.)

I've been into Powe since his rookie year... he produces consistently on both ends of the court. I've come to like him a lot as another under-sized, tough complementary big man.

Big Baby is showing why he's a 2nd round gem, enjoyable player, surprised he's done this well, though.

Both are mature, skilled, consistent, and confident young players - but I'm questionable about how they'll do in the playoffs. Especially in relation to the refs. However much they're used. Be interesting to watch that.

I like Powe. I used to see him on TV when he was in Cal State.

I'm not seeing that at all. Dale was a double-double guy who shot 55% from the floor, got 1+SPG/BPG and was about 6'11" 250lbs. AD was maybe a bit more like Powe/Davis but even he was more of a defender. If anyone on that team is like Dale, for one, it's Perky.

I like Big Baby D...he brings a lot of energy for the team. Gotta give props to a guy that chubby hustling after everything. He's like an Eddie Curry who actually gives effort.

They won't be stars, they are good role players though. I don't expect them to play well on a team like Miami though.

I am absolutely in love with Powe. He is an all out Hustle guy. A lot of his points come from the fact that he never quits, he wants every ball, and the fact that his a terrific finisher. In fact he even had a game winner vs. Minny off of pure hustle. He would be a great pickup for any team and he's definitely and integral part to a championship team.

Big Baby is very similar. He finishes very well and is a beat in the post because of his size. However I think he could still use improvement on his post game on both sides of the court. He also needs to trim down a bit, keep the mass but lose the fat. He too would be a great pick up for any team.

Power impressed me in our last matchup with Boston. He provided tons of energy.

Does anyone have Powe's stats per 40 minutes? I don't think he could play that much until he cuts down on his fouls, but I'd be interested in seeing it.

Glen Davis has a good future in the NBA, Powe on the other hand has been and always will be just another energy guy off the bench. Powe has had some moments this year but he'll never be a starter in the NBA.

In his best years Powe will be a 7th or 8th man off the bench.

What you have to remember is Powe played a lot of minutes when Garnett went down with an injury. He's been with the bench for the most part since then. He hasn't benefitted much at all from Garnett since they haven't played together too much. After next season, they'll likely have to make a choice between keeping Powe or Big Baby as they do play the same position and both are prospects who likely want consistent minutes. My guess is they'll keep Powe and trade Big Baby or he'll leave for free agency. If Powe's knees can hold up throughout his career, he could easily be a 20/10 player. Big Baby should become a quality starter at some point. Ainge did very well drafting both considering their position.

Well, at this moment it would be tough for him to be on the floor for 40 minutes due to his fouls but here's the numbers:

PER 40:

PTS - 21.6
REB - 11.5
BLK - 0.9
STL - 0.8
AST - 0.6
TO - 2.0

Powe was a 20/10 guy in college and has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. He's also very scrappy and often times outhustles other bigs for rebounds and put backs.

This year he has done well enough to be the first "big" off the bench, which puts him in the top 7-8 in the rotation.

He's also one of the genuinely good people in the NBA.
