I think we now know why Michael Jordan is so much better than everyone else. He doesn't feel fear. He senses fear in his opponents but he doesn't feel fear inside of himself. Even when he was 38-39 and had diminished skills he didn't fear anything. In that comeback season he only played 60 games but made 3 game-winning shots (@NY, @CLE, @PHO). And this is at an age when athletes usually lose their nerve. And I recall reading in one of his books, he says when he takes a game-winning shot theres no concern about missing it, because the possibility of making it is so tantalizing. And that when he does miss them he moves on straight away without a care. That doesn't refer to the longterm fear of playoffs, but its clear he sees the glass as being half full rather than half empty. Also, look at the facial expressions on players as they are taking important shots, you can actually see a look of panic on their faces when they watch the ball leave their hands. Jordan didn't have that look.

Also, he's said it a few times even on Nike ads, he isnt afraid to fail... but he is afraid not to try at all...

i believe he said "i can accept failure but i can't accept not trying." of course being accepting of something doesn't mean ur devoid of fear of it. We all accept death as something that happens to everyone, for instance, but we still do our best to avoid and limit it for fear of it happening too soon or too often (to people around us).

and funny too because in those same nike ads jordan's also said "its ok to be scared, im scared too"

fear of being a failure is real for everyone, its just that great players like MJ refuse to believe they'll be one (as he states "im scared of what i wouldn't become, ur scared of what i could become") but obviously that doesn't mean the fear doesn't exist, its clearly acknowledging that it does.

BUT.... in terms of talking on the media calling players out... its very very rare.

jordan running his mouth at john starks, going word for word with gary payton and finger waving muntumbo is what i mean.

not "hey im old so don't let me embarrass you" grandpa stuff. jordan in his prime was known as a vicious trash talker, not being friendly competitive. we all know kobe aint afraid to get in the face of the ray allens and dwyane wades of the world (and vice versa).. and t-mac has gone at the kenyon martins and bobby jackson.. and iverson and jordan had their little thing back in the late 90s.. but their interaction with "old jordan" was all friendly competition.. we know this because they televised just about every washington vs "team with marquee player" matchup those 2 years with the media (espn) looking for some kind of drama to emerge. some of the lesser stars were like "yea i'd love to get at jordan" but a.i. kobe and tmac were showing love (to the media) and rarely were they guarding dude (and vice versa) anyway
