Did the Mavs build thier team around the wrong guy ??
Not taking anything away from Dirk just asking. I have three teams. After years of thinking the Mavs could go all the way I cant help but wonder if he will ever be able to get them over the top.

I think even that is overstated. Diop was only playing 10-15 minutes a game before the trade. Their defense wasn't good with him. They aren't getting stops and its a big reason why they are losing those games, but its not just about Diop.
The Mavs are losing all these close games with good teams because they are falling apart in the clutch. Avery Johnson's poor coaching in the late 4th quarter has cost them quite a few of those games.

i agree but maybe they should have kept nash?
THEY SHOULD HAVE PAYED HIM. Im a Magic fan I did not want miami to win the title befor Orlando. Now they will always have bragging rights cause they got it first. If the Mavs had nash to play that series I have no doubt it would have ended different. Cuban coughs up the money for everthing else his decision will never make sense to me.

The Mavericks need a true shooting guard and they need depth. Their starting frontcourt is among the best in the league but that will only get them so far.
I wouldn't trace their problems back to the Kidd trade or to building around Dirk. I'd trace it back to the cost-cutting measures of a few years ago, during which they managed to get zilch for Nash and Finley. Considering Stackhouse's contract extension, which I was shocked to see him get, and the hefty ticket they gave Terry, to think that Dallas would be recklessly letting better guys go has to receive some blame if not most of it.
Yet another one of those teams that could've been so much better.

Yeah...he finally started playing like the regular season meant something when the 1st agreed deal was announced. Prior to that he had been playing like it was a scrimage. That had nothing to do with Kidd's play on the court.NetsForce wrote:There is a reason Dirk's game has taken off again since Kidd joined the Mavericks. I'm pretty sure that's irrelevant though... right?

That makes no sense and you know it. Dampier was an important part of that team vaulting from 52 to 58 wins. Cuban should've just paid Nash his $3M more per year and had them both. You know, or the team could've not squandered its last four or five MLEs so there would still be a bench after the Kidd trade.
