Did the Mavs build thier team around the wrong guy ??

Post#1 » by east/beastD-12 » Sun Apr 6, 2008 4:37 pm

Not taking anything away from Dirk just asking. I have three teams. After years of thinking the Mavs could go all the way I cant help but wonder if he will ever be able to get them over the top.

Dirk- Howard- Kidd is a scary trio come playoff time. Than you add Terry and other players

Wrong guy? Who else could they have built a team around?

Don't forget that they beat the Spurs in the playoffs with Dirk.

I can't see the Mavs making a run because they don't play good defense, they have a poor bench, and Avery Johnson gets outcoached in every big game.

I don't think they build it around the wrong guy. They build it wrong around the right guy .

This team is just too old , too many almost finished veterans with not much left in the tank.

People have to remember that the reason the Mavs are struggling against good teams is not because of getting Kidd in place of Harris, but rather because they lost the defense in the frontcourt with Diop.

I think even that is overstated. Diop was only playing 10-15 minutes a game before the trade. Their defense wasn't good with him. They aren't getting stops and its a big reason why they are losing those games, but its not just about Diop.

The Mavs are losing all these close games with good teams because they are falling apart in the clutch. Avery Johnson's poor coaching in the late 4th quarter has cost them quite a few of those games.

THEY SHOULD HAVE PAYED HIM. Im a Magic fan I did not want miami to win the title befor Orlando. Now they will always have bragging rights cause they got it first. If the Mavs had nash to play that series I have no doubt it would have ended different. Cuban coughs up the money for everthing else his decision will never make sense to me.

The Mavericks need a true shooting guard and they need depth. Their starting frontcourt is among the best in the league but that will only get them so far.

I wouldn't trace their problems back to the Kidd trade or to building around Dirk. I'd trace it back to the cost-cutting measures of a few years ago, during which they managed to get zilch for Nash and Finley. Considering Stackhouse's contract extension, which I was shocked to see him get, and the hefty ticket they gave Terry, to think that Dallas would be recklessly letting better guys go has to receive some blame if not most of it.

Yet another one of those teams that could've been so much better.

He did help lead them to a Finals, and 2 Ws shy of a NBA Title.....

As long as Avery give Kidd control to run the offense and push the ball at all times, they'll be fine...

See the Lakers game as an example, they pushed it up court at every opportunity and were up by double digits... lost the second half because they slowed it down and went more half court...

As a Mav fan myself, I think Dallas has lost its chance to win a title in the Dirk era the day they traded Harris for Kidd. Unless they can get a steal of a trade or a bargain of a free agent, this team is done til we rebuild.

There is a reason Dirk's game has taken off again since Kidd joined the Mavericks. I'm pretty sure that's irrelevant though... right?

Yeah...he finally started playing like the regular season meant something when the 1st agreed deal was announced. Prior to that he had been playing like it was a scrimage. That had nothing to do with Kidd's play on the court.

Well not many teams make the NBA finals in the first place, so for Dirk to lead them there and is a pretty impressive feat by itself.. I think they'll be fine come playoff time...

the guy won an MVP and went to the finals, who else are you going to build around?

in sports, hindsight is 20/20, but obviously choosing to pay erik dampier instead of steve nash was a huge mistake

That makes no sense and you know it. Dampier was an important part of that team vaulting from 52 to 58 wins. Cuban should've just paid Nash his $3M more per year and had them both. You know, or the team could've not squandered its last four or five MLEs so there would still be a bench after the Kidd trade.
