Glad you brought this up. I am sick of being called a racist in Boston.

Interesting point, but I think the Bird bronzed shoes and plaque, and the Red statue, have less to do with racism than A) Red being the architect behind all 16 championships, and B) Bird playing in the era when the NBA was much more popular than it was in the late 50s and 60s.

Still, Russell deserves a statue or other type of monument in the city. End of story.

Ted Williams and Red Auerbach were white -- statues
Bill Russell is black -- no statue

Real fans know Russell, and I don't think he'd care, but I personally think he deserves a statue or monument, inside or outside the whatever-it-is Garden.

GreenBeans, your question is a good one. I can't answer that but I hope it will help.

That's actually a pretty cool idea. I'd love to see that.

As I said before, I don't Russ cares either way...he'll let his body of work speak for itself, and it does speak volumes!

It does, but still would be cool to have him sitting across Red in a statue.

^^Oh most definitely.

It would be super cool, especially to have him immortalized near his coach and friend, Red.

When you stop and think about it, the first 11 championship banners are a monument enough to Russell.

But as much as I love Bird, having a monument to him and not Bill Russell is just nuts.

Why not put a few statues up somewhere in Boston and name it Celtics square. It would be a tourist attraction.

That is actually an awesome idea John Locke! It'd be packed with awesome players, though, and might be a bit too much for a tourist to take in one viewing!

Could be the camera angle but doesn't Russell's arm look a lot longer than Chamberlains?

His shoulder is lower; yet his finger tips are higher.

That pic completely epitomizes their careers. Russell, defending and giving it his all with determination, the ultimate winner. And Wilt, smiling and not taking it so seriously, scoring like a demon but a loser with no fire in his belly.

I love it.
