He made the decisions that nobody else would make. In many ways, he reformed the NBA.
Back when he signed Nash, everyone said that Nash was overpaid and were still excited about Marbury and Steve Francis. He made a much criticized signing that helped to re-define the importance of the pass first point guard and set the stage for guys like Paul and Williams.
And of course, he's made mistakes. Bargnani may end up being a big one; trading Jason Kidd for Marbury was another. Nonetheless, this is a guy that has picked up diamonds in the rough for years - Diaw, Nash, Bell, Moon, Joe Johnson - and deserves credit for that.
He's clearly not perfect, and he may have overextended himself in his vision for the Raptors, but aside from Buford and Dumars he's as good a GM as you'll find.

what do dirk and bargnani have in common? other than them being int'l products, who play a similar style (if even that), they have not much in common if u ask metoucansma wrote:Last time I checked Bargnani is only 22 years old... It took Dirk awhile to become a good player, if I recall. Everyone wanted him off the Mavericks...

He's done a good job for sure, but to a certain extent...
From with the Suns and Raptors, I think he's too biased towards up-tempo, perimeter-oriented offense.
I mean, is he going to get Bosh a significant defensive helper at center? Their centers aren't at that level at all. At most they're 3rd level role-playing big men. 2nd level for Garbajosa because of his overall game, but he's not enough in the defensive aspect. Bargnani is like a poor-ordinary defender.
The Raptors have to get better defensively up front, and an all-star-caliber wing creator. Parker will be a nice complement and defensive helper next to whoever that would be.
Relying on ball movement and perimeter offense (pretty good deal of jumpshooting) to play well, will keep you limited in how well you can do.
If they view Bosh/Bargnani as their future front-line - eek! Skilled offense, but average at best defense. Not a good kind of situation for future progress and success in the NBA. In the Euroleague, maybe.
Good post.

Good post.

i think colangelo did alright
I think if Mark Cuban owned the Suns, they'd have a ring or two by now..
Spragga - The greatest trick the Raptors ever pulled was convincing the world that Defense doesn't exist.
