Dwight Howard vs. Alonzo Mourning

Post#1 » by Baller 24 » Sat May 17, 2008 6:29 pm

Current Dwight Howard, or Prime Zo?

Here are Zo's stats:

He was a much better defender. Offensively Zo IMO had more options as he wasn't just a turn around and dunk guy, but anyways, who would you guys take?

Tough question; I would probably go with Zo.

Mind if I ask, why you'd take current Dwight over prime Zo?

I just think he has a bigger impact on the game. It is close, but I think Dwight is similar to Zo in his prime but slightly better. Better rebounder, better at drawing fouls, more imposing in the post.

I'll take Zo. Both scored/are scoring about the same, but Zo was the better defender. I'll take the defensive monster in Zo.

Not only that, but there wasn't too many players that brought it harder night in and night out then Zo.

Because Dwight affects the game in less obvious ways than Zo. You can have 4 3 pt shooters and have Dwight the focal point of the offense.

Prime Zo. Zo was able to hit the jumper and his defense was just as good, if not, better than current Dwight. No, I'm pretty sure Zo was much better defensively in his prime, but his offense is what sets him apart.

Prime Zo. I think Dwight is a better offensive player but I like Prime Zo's offense better, and he was a much much much better defensive player.

I think this one is prime Zo. Dwight needs to continue growing and he'll end up surpassing Zo, but as of now, prime Zo gets the nod IMO. He was a slightly better rebounder, a much better shot blocker, a better all around offensive player, and a much better defender (there's a reason he was a two time DPOY).

I think Dwight will get there, possibly by next year. I just think, as of now, Zo has the edge...

I agree in general, but I dont know how you can call Zo a better rebounder. His best year was 11 rebounds a game, and generally would get between 9-10 a game during his prime. Dwight did that his rookie year and didnt even get full start minutes. He's not at what, 14+ a game in his 3rd yr. Dwight's already got the edge on him in that category...

This season Dwight had no rebounders around him averaging more than 5.7 RPG though. Zo was getting 9.6 and 9.9 rebounds per game with PJ Brown next to him getting 8.4 and 8.6 rebounds per game, and with Mashburn getting 5.6 and Austin 5.8. All that in an era dominated by centers (as opposed to the one we see now, where even guys like Chris Kaman can get 13rpg just by being bigger than just about everyone else).

Not to mention players like Anthony Mason getting 9.6, Brian Grant at 8.8, and guards pulling down 5 boards a game too.

Prime Zo, Dwight is a better rebounder and that's it.

Definitely Zo. Dwight isn't developed enough offensively yet to make me take him.

Prime Zo easily over current Dwight.

It'll be interesting to see what prime Dwight is like though.

Prime Zo was a 2-Time DPOY and was the anchor to one of the best defensive teams in the league, and one of the better overall teams in the league during his hey-days.

Pretty much. Dwight might be more physically dominant when he gets the ball deep on the block, and Zo's offense wasn't pretty by any means but it was effective.

Anyone picking Dwight isn't realizing how much better of a defender Zo was... terrifying.

Prime Zo was just NASTY defensively and more well rounded on the offensive end than Dwight. He was real underrated due to the depth of the C position (Hakeem/Shaq/Robinson/Ewing) at that time.
