He was in the finals 4/5 years the first time in LA, and in the second go around he's 1/3 in the Finals.

So basically with the lakers 5/8 he's gotten them to the Finals.

That is ridiculous, he is a legend.

But the real accomplishment is still 4 wins away for him to break the all time record.

Red Auerbach and Phil Jackson are tied for the best. If Phil wins a title this year though, then he takes the top spot in my books.

Considering the recent history: I'm fairly certain Detroit had no top 5 player on their team.

Red Auerbach only had 7 Hall of Famers on his first championship team.

To add more to the thread, here is what someone else mentioned regarding the Lakers.

Check your history Lakers Fans since 1980 there has been a leap year trend.

Either the Lakers or Phil Jackson has been in every leap year Finals since 1980.

Lakers: 80',84',88',00',04',08
Phil: 92',96',00',04',08'

I think it's the coaches job to make his players great.

Phil Jackson has done that a number of times, with a number of different players, over a 20 year span.

Phil Jackson isn't just the best coach in the NBA, you would have a hard time convincing me of a coach more influential in any of the three major sports.

No team has won a championship without a top player besides Detroit. So Phil doing that is not an excuse to undermine him. He can take top talent and properly utilize it.

Because there were definitely a lot of teams back then, right? Totally like 30 teams with 14-16 players each. I'm pretty sure quite a few teams had several hall of famers back then, given the size of the league. The talent base was not nearly as eroded, plus the standards of reaching the HOF were lower.
