Its this type of misinformation that causes the afforementioned predjudice and bias. I've known FLDS people and people who've left polygamist families, and they've always distinguished themselves from the "Mormons."

Basically, you'd be just as accurate to say Catholics and Lutherans and Baptists are all the same too because they consider themselves "christians."

lol. That much at least is true. Watch any Jazz/Lakers or Jazz/Cavs highlights. The Jazz can win in a blow out and you'll still see 2 minutes of Kobe or LBJ highlights with a quick little "Oh yeah, and the Jazz won." tacked on at the end. Its really quite hilarious.

In a league dominated by blacks, Utah has a mostly white team. and on many occasions Utah has traded talented black players for lame duck white players. I've seen people here mention it a lot. I've seen lots of quotes like "Utah gets another white dude" when people propose trades.

Oh and you want a team that really gets over looked. It's the Milwaukee Bucks. No one mentions them ever.

I just want to point out that the Lakers have more white players on their team than the Jazz...but no one seems to dwell on that one. 8)

I think folks hate the Jazz because the Jazz had a good team for like 20 years. I think folks just got tired of seeing them in the playoffs year after year. I think folks just got tired of losing to a team year after year that was from a small market.

That's what I think it was. Just an overdose of the Jazz.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

From a diversity point of view, I doubt anyone will ever confuse SLC with LA.

Also, not that it matters..... but Jordan Farmar is half black (as is Deron Williams, I think), Lakers still have more actual white guys (Chris Mihm, Luke Walton, & Coby Karl) than the Jazz (Matt Harpring & Kyle Korver). The Lakers have the same number of Euros (Vlad, Sasha, & Pau), which usually get thrown into the white player category as the Jazz (AK47, Okur, Fesenko).

Perhaps in the offseason the Lakers can send Coby Karl over to the Jazz to rebalance the universe and restore the stereotype......

For me, personally there is only one real reason why I am anti-utah, and it begins with Karl and ends with Malone. There is not one single athlete in the history of professional sports that I hate(d) more than Malone. It also does not help that when BYU comes down to play UNLV, none of the mormons tip, and always have this confrontational attitude with the local populace.

All that being said, SLC is a very nice city, and the Jazz run a very successful franchise, and should be respected for doing so.

^ Does UNLV still have that Morman from a polygamist family playing for them? I remember the camera panning the stands in one of their tourney games and his dad, moms and brothers and sisters filled up 3 rows of seats.

lol. You actually can't be "Mormon" and "Polygamist," or at leat not a practicing Mormon. Once again, anyone who thinks there is no bias just needs to read this thread to understand how much ignorance is out there regarding Mormons and by association, the State of Utah.

Yep, Joe Darger is a mystery at UNLV. He has conservative values (the only person I have ever heard of, who moved out of the dorms when he found out they were co-ed), and comes from a polygamist family. His dad has two wives (and 46 siblings!), and Joe himself, has 18 siblings. Why he would decide to play in a town like Las Vegas, which is known for bieng extremely liberal, no one knows.

There was actually an interesting article in the NY Times about him:

That is just because BYU spanks UNLV at everything.

Wow, interesting read... it also furthers the bias. Like the poster stated above, he can't not be mormon and polygamist. The LDS church would excommunicate him, if that were the case.

I think you need to keep your emotions in check. I didn't say anything derogatory about Mormons and the state of Utah.

The UNLV player's Dad came from a polygamist family and he was a member of the LDS Church when he met his first wife. Sure the LDS Church in SLC banned it over a century ago, but it was until when the 1970s or 1980s that actually enforced it with any vigour by excommunicating practicing polygamist. Further, even though he's been ex-communicated, he considers himself a Mormon.

The fact is many of these splinter sects consider themselves "true Mormons" and that the powers that be in SLC have lost their way. It's a complicated issue, not unlike debates about whether a person can be a moderate Muslim. The bottom line is that mormonism shouldn't be equated with polygamy, even though its a perception that this religion struggles to fight.

I'll also add that I wrote "Mormon from a polygamist family" in a previous post. The NY Times story notes that Joe Darger is a recognized Mormon by the LDS. He's not yet married so he's not a polygamist.
