He was 6th in the NBA in PPG last year. He had TS% of .618. Kevin Martin also had a TS% of .614 in 06/07, and .604 in 05/06. He is the only SG in the NBA that had back to back to back TS% over 60%. He is already in elite status when attacking the rim, with 9.5 fta/g in 07/08 (which is 5th in the NBA) He was 1st in the league in FTs made per game, 8.2. Ellis is a good scorer but no where near Martin's level. Comparing Ellis 5.2 fta/g and 4.0 ft/m. Martin has the total package of an offensive juggernaut in contrast to Ellis limitations of shooting beyond mid range. But I have to say Ellis mid range game is already one of the best in the NBA. So, I can see he can improve his range. But Ellis average 0.6 3s per game and averaging 23.1%. Compare to Martin's 4.4 3s per game and averaging 40.1%. Martin is soo much better moving w/o the ball. Already one of the NBA's best of doing it. Ellis is better finishing around the rim than Martin. Ellis is a great athlete by doing so. But he has a 31.5 max vert. I assume that he had a higher vert. Which is kinda low compare to Martin's 38 inch vert. While Martin is clearly has a 5 inch advantage height wise. He is ideal at the 2 spot. Ellis has better passing abilities. This is because he is a 1/2. But he has to get better in that aspect though. But Martin has shown promise in that aspect. Even though stats doesn't show. He is pretty good doing his usual "drive-and-kick" to the open man. True, Ellis average more rebounds (5.2) compare to Martin's (4.5) but this could lead to the inflation of stats of "Nellieball" This fast pace tempo leads to more possessions and etc thus more rebounds/steals. If you put Martin in that system, he will be averaging a heck of a lot more points/boards/steals etc. Well, all in all, Martin is in another level in terms of offense.
In defense, both players use their quickness/length to harass the opposition. But Monta plays the passing lane more thus overplaying the opponent. In compare to Martin, he doesn't gamble like Ellis but at times he does. Martin is a better effective defender than Ellis. But to be honest, Martin is an inconsistent defender. At times he is a good defender and at times he looks like average. But then again, Martin has to carry the scoring load. He can't do it at both ends. Even though, he did at times throughout the season, he looked like a frkin superstar. But I would say it is kinda wash in defense.
Well, even though, Im missing some aspects of the game and etc. Either way, this is significant. So, again, I choose Martin.
First of all, if oyu honestly think that Monta only has a 31.5" vertical leap, then your observational skills are pretty poor and I can't take anything you say seriously. I mean, a 6'3" guy who can almost hit his head on the rim must be able to jump pretty high or there is something very weird going on on the court.
Second, I'm not going to get into who is better because I feel they are pretty even and it reaqlly depends on the complimentary players you have assembled on your team to decide which player you would rather have. While I do feel that this post highlights all of Martin's plusses while glossing over (and giving excuses) for his minuses, while it does the exact opposite for Monta. Maybe, just maybe, it could be that Monta is a better rebounder than Martin. No, that can't be it, it has to be the system, and Don Nelson, and daylight savings time, and, oh yeah, Martin is getting better at it too!
Now I can't wait until this year because the two will be on even ground. Martin has been the premier scorer on the Kings for a few years while Monta has been a 3rd option. Now that Baron is gone we are going to see how Monta does with the keys in his hands. He could blow up even more with added opportunities or he could fall back from the added attention. Its really something that we are going to have to wait and see how he adjusts to this new role. I think this comparison will be much easier to make at the end of next year. Then we can do more homeristic battles to the death!
