Dunkenstein wrote:Whereas a typical "normal" contract will have 8% raises from year to year, a typical "front-loaded" contract will have 8% declines from year to year. If there's a PO in the last year, it will usually be at the same salary level as the previous year.

An example of a four-year front-loaded $18M contract with a player option would be $5M, $4.6M, $4,2M, $4.2M. A four-year $18M contract averages $4.5M a year. You'll notice in the example that the total of first two years are over the average by $600,000, and the total of the second two years are under the average by the same amount.

A formula to estimate the contract described above would be A + .92A + .86A + .86A = B, where B is the total salary.

The next time I update I will fix his structure to the following with the understanding that it is not exactly right, but should be fairly close:

$4,725,000, $4,347,000, $3,969,000, $3,969,000 = $17,010,000

Not exactly a lot of excitement going on at the moment, since I did the last update (late Saturday night, I know I need to get a life), all I see is a small blurb that Anthony Carter signed a 1yr vet min deal, big wow. I think I'll hold out for something a little more substantial before I do the next update.

I made a mathematical error in formula that I originally posted. I've since corrected it. So you may want to recheck your numbers.

Bartelstein said Turiaf's contract is "slightly frontloaded" whatever that means. fwiw, the trade checker has Turiaf salary ratio = 16.7, thats the same as Pavlovic who makes exactly $4.5M.

ESPN trade machine has been updated, somewhat. Here are a few interesting items:

It shows Antawn Jamison with a salary of $9,923,285. If you take max raises based on his previous salary of $16,360,094 then you get $1,717,810 raises. Add it up and it works out to exaclty $50M. So I think it is pretty safe to assume that his structure is: $9,923,285, $11,641,095, $13,358,905, $15,076,715.

It shows Elton Brand with a starting salary of $13,757,844. If we use that number and add 8% raises then his contract looks like this: $13,757,844, $14,858,472, $15,959,100, $17,059,728, $18,160,356 for a total of $79,795,500.

It shows James Jones with a starting salary of $4,010,000, I read that his salary structure is "very creative" and that only $2M is guaranteed in each of the last two seasons. I am not sure exactly what to do with that, so hopefully someone can get a peek at the actual numbers.

It also reflects the full MLE for Beno Udrih (4 yrs), Desagana Diop (4yrs), Chris Duhon (2 yrs) and Mickael Pietrus (3yrs). The length is interesting because I don't think they consider option years. I say that because supposedly Pietrus got 3yrs, with a PO for the 4th and both Udrih & Diop got 5 years, perhaps the 5th year is a player option for both of them. One other sidenote, there was some question as to whether Pietrus got the full MLE, this indicates that he in fact did (they could be wrong of course).

Anthony Johnson to the Magic.

The club signed veteran Anthony Johnson on Tuesday to fill the back-up point-guard role behind starter Jameer Nelson. Johnson accepted a two-year deal woth $3.8 million --- the same offer that Dooling rejected some time ago. "It was a conflict of interest. The Magic had a certain amount of money and I didn't fit into their plans," Dooling said by phone. "There's no ill will."

Thanks, I got to fix that, I just assumed he would only get the Vet Min.

As I mentioned in the other thread, it sounds like 5 yrs, $27.5 million for Daniel Gibson.

James Posey signed with New Orleans, 4 years, $25 million.

LAS VEGAS -- The reigning NBA champions are about to lose their glue guy.

James Posey, arguably the most coveted unrestricted free agent left on the market, agreed to a four-year deal with the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday worth an estimated $25 million, his agent, Mark Bartelstein, said.

Because of future luxury-tax concerns, Boston was apparently reluctant to offer Posey, 31, more than a two- or three-year deal starting at the league's mid-level exception (just under $5.6 million) in spite of Posey's considerable contributions to the Celtics' first championship since 1986.

Getting Posey would be a huge coup for the Hornets, who are coming off a breakthrough season and increasingly billed as a future power in the West with quality starters such as David West, Tyson Chandler and Peja Stojakovic surrounding face of the franchise Chris Paul.

But the Hornets went into the summer desperate to fortify their thin bench and import a proven winner like Posey, who has won two rings in the past three seasons with the Celtics and Miami Heat.

Thanks for the updates, I wonder about how much Gibson actually got. I found this little blurb from the Cleveland Plain Dealer on Hoopshype:

Cavaliers land Gibson with 5-year, $20.8 million deal, but lose out on forward James Posey

Link:
http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2008/07/cavaliers_land_gibson_to_5year.html

So for now, I'll go with the $20.8 number when I do my next update later today.

C.J. Miles has signed a offer sheet with OKC, believed to start above the $1.2 QFO the Jazz made.

I was just going through the NBA draft order and noticed that the following 1st round picks have yet to officially sign their rookie scale contract:

#1 - Derrick Rose
#24 - Serge Ibaka
#25 - Nicolas Batum
#26 - George Hill
#28 - Donte Greene (supposedly signed, but I see no confirmation on the transactions list)
#30 - Jr Giddens

Is this correct?

You don't have Marrese Speights listed. Probably just forgot him. He was signed a couple days ago. Assuming he got 120%, it would be...

Marrese Speights - Sixers - Rookie scale contract (#16)
2008-2009 - $1,542,600
2009-2010 - $1,658,280
2010-2011 - $1,773,960 (TO)
2011-2012 - $2,721,252 (TO)

Brook Lopez and Ryan Anderson are unsigned I believe @10 and @21.

Terrific job here by the way. This is really impressive and comprehensive.

Lopez and Anderson were two of the first rookies signed. lakerfan's listed is right, apart from Greene, who DID sign, but with very little pomp and ceremony.

Hey lakerfan, I've noticed sometimes you've listed the team option or partially guaranteed years, the last year on C.J. Miles is a team option.

I am trying to get them all accurate, but it is hard because we don't always find out about the options right away. Let me know if you see any others that I missed and I will try and keep it as up to date as possible. Thanks for all the help.....
