Can we sign him into an extension after the season instead of getting killed when he hits free agency?

He is certainly making Abreu expendable once the season is over

Obviously Nady has been great since he became a Yank, but how does that make Abreu expendable. Abreu has been by far the best Yankee offensively all season. And considering Melkys terribly dissapointing year, and the uncertain status that the Yanks will have with Matsui and Damon going forward, i think it is a must that we resign Abreu, especially if he will sign for a 2-3 year deal.

I don't want an OF next year of Damon/Melky/Nady/Matsui, even if you say someone like Gardner or Jackson maybe ready to play everyday when Damon/Matsui gets hurt. Abreu needs to come back next year IMO.

I'd try to steer clear of a 3 year deal for Bobby. 2 is the max I'd go.

Let his ass go. We need a #3 hitter with some pop. I'm tired of seeing our 3rd and 4th hitter always striking out with men in scooring position. We need to let giambi go this off season and sign teixeira..

Abreu has been excellent, but with the crazy amount of corner oufielders that we have right now, I don't think it pays to get locked into a 3 or 4 year deal with Abreu. He is a good hitter, but he has lost some power (which will only continue) and his defense is non existant, and even his arm hasn't been as spectacular as usual. He is a nice player, but when push comes to shove, next year we are going to have Damon, Matsui, and Nady already taking up corner outfield spots and DH. And that isn't even counting Posada, who is going to be seeing more and more time at DH as his career goes on. I would love to keep Abreu around but he isn't a necessity if he is going to be a .280 hitter with 15 homers and zero defense.

I like nady a lot, type of guy we should lock up now... certainly is not afraid to play in NY and he is just a gritty type of guy.....

Agreed. Lock Nady up long term. This guy is always in the middle of a big inning. Either he is leading off with a big home run or he is driving them in. It seems like when the Yankees need a hit, he comes through. His number since joining the Yanks have been ridiculous. Granted it's a small sample size at 13 games but a 1.203 OPS can't be dismissed, in the heat of a pennant race, while switching leagues.

In terms of Abreu, he has to go. Too many guys on this roster have the same role as him. Damon and Matsui both play more important roles than Abreu does. Plus, Abreu brings us two draft picks back where the other two guys, we can't be sure what we get for them. So basically, I would offer Abreu arbitration, if he accepts and we have him for one more year, great. If he declines, we take the draft picks. -Jitpal

I'm still not sold on Nady. He's hitting the ball harder this year--his line drive percentage is up--but I don't think that or his extremely high BABIP are sustainable. He may have improved some as an overall hitter, but a lot of this is luck and he probably isn't more than a slightly above average corner outfielder. I'd offer him arbitration for next year and let at least some of the season play out before thinking about an extension.

I can't see the Yanks relying on an OF/DH situation that has Nady/Melky/Matsui/Damon/Posada. There is not one everyday 135-140 game player in that group outside of Nady. I would resign Abreu to a 2-3 year deal and look to trade Damon while he has raised his value here in the second half. We do have a lot of corner outfield/DH types on the roter without Abreu, unfortunately none of them can be counted on next year IMO. Nady should be our LF'er next year and I don't even mind Melky back in CF until Jackson is ready, however I don't think that either Matsui or Damon should or could play everyday in the OF.

Resign Abreu, sign Texeira (maybe if he isn't looking for a 10/$200 deal), let Giambi walk, trade Damon, wait for Jackson or Gardner. That would be the way that I retool our offense for next year. If you put Texeira fifth he would give real protection to ARod and drive in Abreu since he is on base all the time.

SG- Earl Monroe/James Harden/Dana Barros
SF- Billy Cunningham/Michael Finley/Chet Walker

I think that the way our team is built, Matsui is a guy we should look to trade way before Damon. Damon just makes this team go when he is hot, he makes a lot more happen with his speed and the at bats he puts together. I can't even keep track of how many times he has started a game with an 8 or 9 pitch at bat and really put the pitcher in a hole right out of the game.

Agreed, but how do you get rid of Matsui? Let's forget the foreign income, just look at his stats. He is a consistent 25 home run and 100 RBI guy. If he had enough AB's right now he would be leading the AL in hitting, and a .404 OBP and .458 Slugging. Those are phenomenal numbers and not easily replaced, in fact he would probably be in the MVP discussion and the Yankees would not be 7 games out of 1st place in the AL East. You hope Cano can be that guy but he has to prove it first and he hasn't done a good job of that this year. Then let's look at situational stuff, close and late he is over .450 this year. .338 with RISP and .417 with runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs. Not to mention that he is a professional hitter who can actually protect Arod. He makes our offense go with all of his clutch hits. Just look at this year, against the Red Sox and Tampa Bay. .455BA, .600 OBP, .636 SLG, 1.236 OPS against Boston and .289 BA, .308 OBP, .658 SLG, and .966 OPS against Tampa. He also has 4 of his 7 home runs against Tampa and an absolutely ridiculous 1.500 OPS in Fenway.

You can't replace this in the lineup, not at all. How do you trade that away? I'd rather not deal either and get rid of Abreu. I'd roll with Damon, Matsui, Melky and Nady in the OF. Damon is also clutch and raises his game in big spots and as you said, he sets our offense up well. However, choosing between the two, I stick Jeter in leadoff and keep Matsui. We can't get a hitter to replace Matsui. -Jitpal

I agree completely about letting Abreu walk and holding onto Matsui who would then only have 1 year left. I just meant that if it came down to one of the two, Damon is the guy we should keep over Matsui if we had to trade one. But I'd much rather stick Nady in right, Damon in left, and DH Matsui. I think that would be ideal, assuming we sign Teixeira and let Giambi walk.

I agree, that is a good OF. I'd probably see if Kotsay agrees to a one year deal or a deal with a team option for the 2nd year. He has had some injury problems but he is hitting pretty well this year in Atlanta and he still has a pretty good glove. He would be an offensive upgrade over Melky and would keep CF warm for Austin Jackson. I also like Juan Rivera as an OF option but I don't really see where he fits unless we get rid of Damon, then we could use an everyday LF in Rivera.

I don't think we will sign Teixiera and I don't think we should either. 10 years and 230 is the supposed Boras number. While I highly doubt he gets that, it is an insane number. Something like 5/90 would be right but I doubt that gets it done. I seriously believe the Angels have every intention of signing him long term plus there are a few teams that could use his bat. I could see the Mariners, White Sox, Angels, Rays, Orioles, and Mets as teams that could be interested in him. Going after Teixiera to me is eerily similar to going after Giambi, although Giambi was on the wrong side of 30. I'd much rather spend that money on CC. Plus, I don't like the idea of tying up 1B. Posada could need some AB's there next year and for the rest of his deal. Plus, outside of Cano and Melky the rest of our regulars are at the age or are soon approaching the age where they might need to be moved from their current positions. Why lock it down and remove all flexibility? Posada and Nady can both play 1B. I would like to see if we could deal for Chad Tracy from the D'Backs. He is completely superfluous there with CoJack and Mark Reynolds. Solid glove but not great and a very solid hitter for a number 8 guy. They have him signed for a couple of years and they probably need to free up some money for Webb and Haren. They have a bullpen need and we have some bullpen arms. It's a deal that makes sense for both sides. Something like Tracy for Veras and prospects. -Jitpal

If we let Giambi and Abreu walk, that leaves a huge hole in the offense. Our offense has already been mediocore, so taking away the 3 and 5 hitters could hurt a lot. However, I do see your point about not locking up a 1B long-term for a number of reasons. I can see Juan Miranda playing a big role at 1B next season if that does happen.

We are going to be in a really tough position this offseason for both the offense and the pitching staff.

I agree it is a big hole, although I don't consider Giambi that big. Figure that Posada and Matsui are back at full strength in terms of hitting next year. That should be around 50 home runs and 200 RBIs more than this year. We have Nady, who replaces all of Giambi in terms of production. Cano has to move up in the order, give him better protection than Melky or Molina and he should do alright too. Next year would be a huge year, in terms of make or break for Cano.

Don't forget that we have a few guys in the minors who slot in to being pretty decent hitting 1B, Miranda being one of them. Montero, Laird, Duncan(maybe?) are a few others. If Montero does outgrow Catcher and he has to be a 1B, I don't want him being blocked because we have Teixiera in the middle of his 10 year deal. -Jitpal

Nady should be locked up, bobby, eh he shouldnt be resigned at 16 mil maybe 10-13mil, what i love about the nady deal is that we stole him from the mets, the mets wanted him badly, but we got him...
