I like Ted Thompson, but keeping KGB (simply to avoid the disruption in the locker room) and making that deal for Tony Gonzalez might have helped today IMO.
I don't agree on KGB. He's always been a one trick pony, a guy who can create a lot of pressure on quarterbacks. That in itself is a very valuable skill in the NFL given how much of a passing league it's become, so i had no problem paying six million for KGB to be a pass rusher and nothing else. Last season, his ability to get sacks or hurry the QB played a role in the 13-3 record given Sanders likes to only rush four. This year though, KGB has obviously been hampered by his knee issues/age and he lost a step, that step he needs to beat left tackles off the edge. You can't waste a roster spot on a DE that can't play run downs, no longer can get to the quarterback, and who doesn't play special teams.
As for Gonzalez, i'd have considered giving up a second rounder, but only if he's also a good run blocker, that i don't know though. We talk a lot about Clifton/Tauscher not being ideally suited for the ZBS and hurting the run blocking, but one thing that often gets glossed over is that none of our tight ends are much of run blockers. On top of that, Rodgers for whatever reason isn't throwing as much to Lee this year. I don't get coaches film so it's hard to know if Lee just isn't getting open as much, if plays where the TE is the first/second option aren't being called as much, or if Rodgers just looks to his WR's more than Brett did. Either way, between the below average run blocking and meager receiving numbers, overall production from the TE position hasn't been much.
