The GM overpaid for a lot of marginal defensive players, and he also drafted someone in Gholston who showed no signs when he actually played in college that he was worthy of a top 10 pick. He is a bust, it was obvious he was going to be a bust. The only place he is a top 10 talent is in the workout room. The only reason the GM should be kept on is because he stole Faneca. This man is the 2nd best guard in the league and bringing him on took a line that was terrible last year and gave it some credibility. The line still has a long way to go though, and if Favre comes back they need to severely upgrade the o-line.
Mangini should have been fired because he is a terrible coach. The Jets had a cake walk of a schedule and it is hilarious they couldn't get at least 12 wins from it.
and if you are going to bring in Brett Favre, you need tall WRs. He is going to throw jump balls a lot, you need tall WRs to go up and get it.
Firing the coach was a sign to Brett that he should come back since Favre knew Mangini was a hack of a coach. Maybe this time the Jets will actually hire someone who knows how to coach, instead of jokes like Edwards and Mangini.
They should hire Spags from the Giants. Or if they really are committed to making Favre happy over all, then bring in Holmgren.
Wow, you are incredibly wrong on Gholston. He was the best value pick at 6 after others were gone. All he did at Ohio State was breaking the sack record in his junior year and completely owning Jake Long when these two played each other. He has all the physical tools but everybody knew he would be a project pick, a great athlete who is not yet a football player. Having BT and Pace before him who played good early on didn't help him either and while I don't want to praise his effort by any means or diminish the fact that he should have played better, we should never give up that early on a guy like him. Also remember that he changed his position from college DE to 3-4 OLB. And in Mangini's and Sutton's terrible read and react scheme this is a tough thing to do...
Also, Greg Jennings is 5-11 and Donald Driver is 6-0, both were starting in GB, so how did that work out with Favre and his jump balls?!? Favre came in way too late, out of shape and with the makeup of our team we should have never let him throw the ball that much. Problem is, you have a name like Favre, he has to get his throws and all. Now one problem is that Mangini is terrible at making adjustments. Opponents jam our receivers at the LOS, Keller gets double coverage, opposing TEs absolutely pick us apart... no reaction! We had no answers for things like that and that is clearly on the coach,
Screw this one year plan with Favre, we have to move on. And to Spagnuolo, while I like him, his background and his fire, he's a 4-3 guy and that's the last thing that we need. Just at the time when we got all the personnel for the 3-4 we turn the D around again. Pace and BT would be absolutely useless in the 4-3, to me that just isn't an option.
Faneca is a great run blocker but his pass protection at times has been horrific. In my opinion while I liked the signing, Ferguson and Mangold both played better over the course of the year and Faneca only got in the pro bowl because of his reputation...
