Will Melo injury trigger a trade?

Post#1 » by SnakefromHell » Tue Jan 6, 2009 10:23 am

Just like in the 2006-07 season when Melo and JR suspension led us to acquiring AI... now I think we might pull a trade that not only nets us a big man but also a scorer in the package.

But Im lazy to think of scenarios

that's what im hoping.

Anthony Parker, Nick Collision/Chris Wilcox, John Salmons...

they spring to mind.

though i'd hate to get more guards to eat up JER's minutes.

Right now I like everyone else is just holding their breath. I'm hoping for 3 weeks not 2 or 3 months.

It should place more emphasis on seeking a trade partner. With all the pieces Denver has they should be asking themselves what it will take to compete with the cream of the crop in the NBA. The answer seems to be adding a big and a wing. The Samb trade continues to confirm what I've been saying. The Nuggs don't want to pay luxury tax and they won't use the trade exception until this summer.

One example

Chucky Atkins (exp), Linas Kleiza (exp), 1st or 2nd rounder for John Salmons. This deal gets the Nuggets the rest of the way under the lux tax.

Then the Nuggets could move Steven Hunter for Eddie Najera. Najera really isn't doing much in New Jersey so dumping his contract would be a plus for them. Over the summer NJ could just buyout Hunter or waive him.

Next option

Could at least offer Atkins, Hunter, Kleiza, and first rounder for Anthony Parker and Andrea Bargnani.

Atkins, Hunter, Kleiza, Weems, for Mike Miller and Calvin Booth.

Next Option

Hunter, Atkins, Weems, for DeShawn Stevenson and Darius Songalia

Next Option

Joe Smith, Damien Wilkins for Hunter, Atkins, and 2nd rounder.

Plenty of ideas out there.

This gives the knicks there lebron james cap space

Jared Jeffries and David Lee for Chucky Atkins, Steven Hunter, and a future first.

K-mart, Nene, Lee. What a 3 man big rotation.

I like the idea of Wilkins... he's a scorer who can also defend a little bit. If J.R. is missing games because of his court time, then he can come in to contribute. When Melo comes back I think Wilkins will make Karl forget Anthony Carter.

I like Joe Smith because he's professional and all but I think he's a little undersized and is not really a physical forward. I think the best they have is Wilcox. He's a bruiser and will finish around the rim off the passes from our guards, Melo and Nene. If only Wilcox has David Lee's size and rebounding skill, he'd be an all star.

You don't think John Salmons would make Karl forget about Anthony Carter?

Wilcox does have Lee's size at least

The problem with acquiring Wilcox is matching the sallaries.

^I thought Wilcox and Smith's salaries are about the same?

How about Jermaine O'Neal everyone?? Use Camby's exception.

No. Wilcox is the highest paid player on the team. I like Jermaine O'Neal. Just stating the obvious... he's an injury risk. And his contract is huge. You'd have to give up K-Mart to do it. So to conclude... don't do it. They traded Samb for one reason. Luxury tax. O'Neal would put them way into the luxury tax. However they can use the trade exception after the season without the luxury tax issues.

they won't make any deals that are reactions to the injury. that'd probably just disrupt rhythms and make it harder to win.

they'll probably trade atkins to get under the tax at some point. but that won't help this team from a talent perspective much.

What's going on guys? New poster here. Glad to finally find a place with some knowledgeable Nuggets fans!

Anyways, I don't know how many of you listen to Scott Hastings' radio show here, but he was just posed with the question of the Nuggets pulling a trade with Melos injury and although he repeated he couldn't say anything, he certainly knew a lot more than we do and said it looks like we'll be getting a 14 and 12 type guy who's under the radar and can ball.

My opinion is simply that the Melo trade may hasten a trade like the AI trade was hastened, but it should be for the big they should have gone after a week or two ago, and it's not going to be blockbuster in the sense of AI one of the best players ever blockbuster.

Melo's suspension did not lead us to bringing in AI. A deal was more or less finalized the day before the Knicks game....before Billy King got bitch slapped by the Sixers owner. Then it was onto the backup deal that ended up actually happening....which would have happened either way, fight or no fight.

That is about what I think. They will trade Atkins for a player making slightly less money, so they can stay under the luxury tax if some of the performance bonuses are met.
