Burres hopes to make most of chance

Brian Burres wouldn't mind experiencing a little deja vu on Saturday night. The Blue Jays left-hander will be taking the mound at U.S. Cellular Field almost exactly one year removed from an outing in which he dominated the White Sox.

Last April 26, Burres headed up the hill on the South Side and blanked Chicago's powerful lineup for eight innings en route to a win for Baltimore. Burres, who was promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday to replace injured starter Ricky Romero, plans on studying that performance to prepare for his first start with the Jays.

"That's always nice," Burres said. "You can go back and look at the video and kind of see what you did with some of the guys who are still here. I'm just pumped up for the first time back."

Burres -- called up after a strained right oblique sidelined Romero -- is the second pitcher to slide into the Blue Jays' rotation this month due to injuries. On April 14, Toronto moved lefty Brian Tallet out of the bullpen and into the starting staff after Jesse Litsch was shelved with tightness in his right forearm and elbow.

In both cases, the Blue Jays decided against turning to young pitching prospects Brett Cecil and Brad Mills -- a pair of arms at Triple-A after vying for rotation jobs with Toronto during the spring. Toronto feels Cecil and Mills need more time in the Minors, and given the Jays' hot start to the year, the club prefers to have more of a veteran presence at the moment.

Should be interesting to see him throw. Truth be told his numbers weren't THAT bad last year. Sure, he was really, really bad. But his numbers at least offer a shred of hope that he might be less bad later on.

No, he really was THAT bad last year. He's a horrible pitcher.

His 2007 and 2008 MLB numbers show a pretty consistent trend: an ERA about 6.00, a WHIP close to 1.70, and over 1.0 HR/9. He is Josh Towers throwing from the left side. The only positive I notice in his numbers is that in 2007 he had a K/9 of 7.1, which is very good. However, it dropped to 4.4 the following season. His minor league numbers are nothing special either.

I think the best case here is if he gives us a few outings that are solid (5 innings, 3-4 runs) and then vanishes the minute Romero or Litsch get back. He is the dictionary definition of a stop-gap. They did not want to rush Cecil or Mills, and for whatever reason did not want to go with Fabio Castro who is doing great in AA (he started tonight). I guess they wanted to throw the mediocre vet out there instead of rushing the better young talent, which is understandable.

Burres should never play in the big league again.

One last shot, if he performs like he did last time out this guy doesn't even deserve to head back to Las Vegas rather he should just be placed on waivers.

Return to Toronto Blue Jays
