Brian Burres wouldn't mind experiencing a little deja vu on Saturday night. The Blue Jays left-hander will be taking the mound at U.S. Cellular Field almost exactly one year removed from an outing in which he dominated the White Sox.
Last April 26, Burres headed up the hill on the South Side and blanked Chicago's powerful lineup for eight innings en route to a win for Baltimore. Burres, who was promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday to replace injured starter Ricky Romero, plans on studying that performance to prepare for his first start with the Jays.
"That's always nice," Burres said. "You can go back and look at the video and kind of see what you did with some of the guys who are still here. I'm just pumped up for the first time back."
Burres -- called up after a strained right oblique sidelined Romero -- is the second pitcher to slide into the Blue Jays' rotation this month due to injuries. On April 14, Toronto moved lefty Brian Tallet out of the bullpen and into the starting staff after Jesse Litsch was shelved with tightness in his right forearm and elbow.
In both cases, the Blue Jays decided against turning to young pitching prospects Brett Cecil and Brad Mills -- a pair of arms at Triple-A after vying for rotation jobs with Toronto during the spring. Toronto feels Cecil and Mills need more time in the Minors, and given the Jays' hot start to the year, the club prefers to have more of a veteran presence at the moment.
