How is filling one need out of many going to solve our problems? The fact of the matter is, we won 24 games last year. I don't agree with your assumption but assume we would've won 30 games with a healthy Al. Hinrich at best improves us 5-10 wins. So being generous, we win 40 games next year with Hinrich. To be a playoff team in the West, you need to win minimum 48 games (and even then you might not make it ex. Warriors two years ago). With our 40 win team, we just miss the playoffs so we get a low lottery pick (12-14) and we have no cap space. How do you suppose we make that leap from 40 to 50 wins when we have no cap space and no significant draft pick?
Our long term plan has been to rebuild through the draft and clear cap space to sign a big time free agent. If we can strike gold with our #6 pick this year and sign a good free agent in 2010, we will be a 50 win team.
Its filling the biggest hole on any roster in the entire league, its not just any hole i'm talking about here.
Telfair is awful at both ends of the floor playing one of the two positions that have the largest impact on how the rest of plays. He brings nothing to the table offensively to make up for his defense and nothing defensively to make up for his offense.
Its quite clear that he limits his team mates and in order to get a clear idea of how much he limits them you need a good PG around before you can know what you already have here.
As for getting better after Hinrich gets you to 40 or so wins? You think that Love, #6, Jefferson, Foye, Pekovic are as good as they'll get?
You think that Hinrich won't have trade value?
You think that free agents are less likely to sign here if the team doesn't suck then if the team sucks?
I've heard mention that at least Telfair makes backup PG money unlike many other backup PG's, who gives a damn if he makes the league minimum he still doesn't help cause he is awful. The Wolves could be paying Chalmers 750K right now and have a far better starting PG.
It is the biggest hole on our roster. That is why we will draft Holliday or Evans.
