2009 June Draft Thread: SF has Pick #6

This is a weak hitting draft compared to last year, but we can still land a nice player.

Tyler Matzek, Alex White and Zach Wheeler could be our top pitching targets. Grant Green and Donovan Tate could be our top position targets.

I think the Giants should get a hitter. Then again, I know nothing about the draft prospects this year.

I said it before the season started and I am going to continue to stick to it. The Giants will select Donovan Tate at #6 to be their CF of the future. Best HS player in the draft.

I believe we are too but the lack of a CF prospect to take over for AR scares me. I mean WF has been a total bust, if you can say bust this early, so far. Who else would you feel comfortable turning over CF to?

Plus, how can the potential OF of Kieschnick in LF, Tate in CF and the young international stud Rodriguez in RF not get as excited as prom night?

Way too early to think about Rowand's replacement. It could be Fairley, could be someone who is not on the roster. The draft isn't about need, its about taking the best talent available and the consensus seems to be that the pitching is strong at the top. I think Tate takes a bit of a dip due to other future commitments and signing bonus money.

The Giants have proven the last handful of years not to care about a signing bonus. Look at what they have done via international prospects and Posey last year. Not to mention they are considered the favorite for one of top 3 international players this year as well so I dont believe money will play into their thinking at all.

In my opinion, I dont see any difference between Matzek, Wheeler or Tate. All three have the potential to be longtime all-stars. As such, I think you look at what your system has vs what it does not have. There is a lot of pitching depth and very little OF depth. Therefore, I would go with Tate.

I would be more than happy with any of the three though.

So there you have it...We got Zach Wheeler. Why the hell did we take a catcher in the next round??? when we clearly need a player with a big bat that can play multiple positions???

Love the pick.

I think this means Alderson is gone though. The potential of a Lin, Mad, Cain, Wheeler and throw in a rec league softball pitcher at #5 you still have the best staff is baseball. Plus, no way the Giants could afford all five long-term as all are potential 1 or 2's in any rotation. Cant trade Lin or Mad and no way I would deal Cain so that just leaves Alderson.

I would package Sanchez and Alderson and go get one of the top 5 players between the ages of 25 and 29. In my opinion, we now have one of the best packages to offer for a big bat. What about something like Sanchez and Alderson for Adam Jones of Baltimore?

And the catcher in the second round, he only caught for one year. They drafted his bat. You can find another position for him with that bat.

No way I'm trading Alderson. The most we should offer for a bat is Sosa and Sanchez.

You want a bat you have to give up something. If anything, Sanchez has lost value this year. He has been very average at best. You are going to have to give up one blue chip to get anything of value back. The one place where we have a blue chip to spare is SP. You aren't going to trade Lin, Cain or Mad. That leaves Alderson and Wheeler. You cant trade Wheeler because he is an unproven commodity. So you are left with Alderson.

Look at what Atlanta had to give to up to Pit for a marginal talent. If we want real talent, we have to give up Alderson.

If Sanchez and Sosa isn't enough to offer, then we don't need to make a trade.
