OKC's main target = Millsap, 5yr/$65 million???

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Tue Jun 30, 2009 3:21 pm

Utah's Paul Milsap and New York's David Lee are highly coveted yet restricted free agents who will have several suitors, including Memphis and Oklahoma City. Reports already have Oklahoma preparing to offer Milsap a five-year, $65 million contract -- something similar to a deal Lee reportedly is seeking.

That's one massive contract, but I guess they know they'll have to really overpay for Utah to let him walk for nothing.

I'd think about matching at 40mil. But 65? They can have him.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

For that price they can have him. The Jazz can just stand back and watch as a division rival cripples themselves financially for a player who will never deliver to the expectations that come with that kind of contract.

I never thought I'd want to let Sap walk, but wow. That's more than I'd pay Booz.

I'd celebrate the day when a team like OKC ties themselves down that much with Millsap. I think the guy is great, and he is fun to watch, but not 13 mill fun. I bet they have the contract front loaded though so it goes 16 14 12 10 8 or something like that...

Wow...that is pretty steep. I don't want to let Millsap walk but that is one huge contract.

According to one NBA agent not representingy Millsap, however, Oklahoma City "will make Paul a big offer."

there you go.

Well, it will suck to lose Paul, but he isn't worthy anywhere near that much money.

Maybe the Jazz stun everyone and sign David Lee.

Haha that is awesome. Good for Sap and best of luck to ya. Bet you wish you would have stayed when the Jazz beat your butt a few times a year.

Got to let him go, expecially if Boozer opts in. Cant even trade him either as Jazz cannot afford a return contract that matches that even if less years. If Boozer opted out and signs with Detroit, then Jazz can afford to trade Millsap in sign and trade in exchange for a player with a short term contract moving AK-47 to PF. I rather have Amare, or some other star, for one year than let both Millsap and Boozer leave for nothing.

Milsap is great but offering him a contract that big is ridiculous. Milsap is gone.

How much did you think he was going to command on the open market?

Troy Weaver is in for a short career if he is throwing that kind of money around. Remember Scott Layden bringing Howard Eisley (6 years $42 mill) and Shandon Anderson (6 years $40 mill) to New York and the grief that resulted? Millsap is better than those two were at that point, but still....$13 mill/year for 5 years?!? He will be expected to perform day in/day out all season long and step it up in the playoffs for that kind of money.

Enjoy oil country Paul. I guess it is closer to his old stomping ground too.

I am sure it would be front loaded, so I think you are correct in that assumption.

No, OKC does not have the cap room to offer 16m starting. They are right at 13, meaning that the best they could offer would be a deal averaging around 14.5m per year.

This is a pretty bad deal, but not for the reasons that everyone is saying here. I believe Millsap is capable of earning a contract like that one. I really do. But the question is whether or not you are just bidding against yourself. You have to play the market. This is the mistake that Orlando made when they signed Shard. Also Washington with Arenas. If no other team will give him more than 10m per and you are offering 13, you just wasted a substantial amount of money for nothing.

All that said, I don't think Millsap is a good fit on that team, and I do not think the Jazz will match this deal. But don't rush to judgment, either. The early part of the FA period is similar to the week before the draft, with all sorts of misinformation floating about. Given the outrageous nature of this bit of info, I am taking it with a strong dose of skepticism. Not saying it won't happen, but I'll need a little more to convince me than this.

That would be great for millsap if this is true. The guy worked himself into this situation, so he should cash in and play next year for OKC.

okc's got one of the better cap situations in the nba right now, really the only guy making significant dough on the roster is collison and he's only got a couple years left.

that said i can't imagine them offering this much for millsap. i think if it's going to be 13m the deal will be shorter, probably four years.

Milsap for Collison trade with jazz including a future first rounder. Maybe the jazz off Brandon Bass the mid level at 5.5. Maybe the jazz can get Smith from Minnesota for a future first. Gooden for the Mid Level . Goodbye Milsap and hope you do good.
