wtf is all I can say. Primeau is a 4th line C, nothing more, and all we get for giving up Stralman is a 2nd in 2011?? Wow, Burke lost the plot on this one. And I'm assuming this means Kaberle is sticking around, after dealing Stralman we only have one guy that can move the puck and that's Ian White (to some extent Beauchemin isn't a bad puck mover).
I'm still in shock at how bad this deal is. I can't believe Burke would just give away Stralman like that. We should've gotten a 2nd rounder just to take on Primeau's contract for next season and maybe giving them a semi-decent prospect, not one looked at as a future top 4 defenseman.

Stralman would never be a top 4 on a good team.

Yeah, it's debatable, but what isn't is his potential. I personally think you're looking at a solid puck moving d-man, a great asset for the power play and a top 4 on a winning club at some point. But he's a boom or bust really, he doesn't have a niche as a bottom pairing defender, he needs to make it as a top 4. I think with his quicks/passing ability, he will.

i agree with this statement and i like the fact that the leafs are the team that is obtaining the high round pick for a change.

Re: stralman traded to calgary
This looks like a bad deal to me. Primeau is 33 y/o 4th line C who is tough and gritty but we have enough of those. Mayers, Orr and May could all do the same job but better.
A 2nd round-pick is very good thing to obtain but the price was steep in Stralman who is young puck-moving defenseman and young offensive d-men don't come around too often.
While I don't like the deal, I trust what Burkie is doing but time will tell with this deal.

Maybe if it was a 2nd round pick in 2010's draft I would have been somewhat okay with this deal, but as of now I don't understand the logic behind it...

Re: stralman traded to calgary
The only person Stralman could replace was Karberle, and that wasn't happening anyways.
Hes a good skater and can make the first pass out of the d-zone... but other then that, he doesn't provide much. He can't run the PP on an nhl team.
As far as the trade goes... I'm a bit more concerned where Burke is going to get the money to acquire some forwards who can actually score.

Re: stralman traded to calgary
I've cooled on it a bit after considering some things. I've overrated Stralman for sure. I just really liked the fact that this kid came from virtually no where and showed some jaor flashes of skill. But the issue is pretty clear, his defense isn't NHL calibre yet. He had little chance of making the team this year. I still love his potential, but to send him down to the minors he would have had to clear waivers, which wouldn't have happened. All in all it does break into the two parts, Stralman for a 2nd and Stuart/7th for Primeau. I'm still not a fan, but it's not that bad.

Re: stralman traded to calgary
Basically the trade breaks down Stralman/7th rounder for a 2011 second rounder.
Colin Stuart = Wayne Primeau.
Both players are around the same in terms of current impact. Neither will make really much noise on the current team and both possibly wouldnt/wont even make the team. If this team really is gunning for the playoffs next season, I'd prolly rank Primeau ahead of Stuart for leadership reasons. This part of the trade has minimal impact either way.
Stralman is a decent prospect but hes not nearly as good as people have made him out to be. Hes been here two seasons and yet to crack the lineup as a regular. He has nice potential but he still has many holes on the defensive side of things. He also has been said to take many nights off last season in the AHL and im sure Burke wasnt a fan of this. As the depth chart stands right now, Stralman wasnt going to be in the top 6 and hes already threatened to bolt back to sweden in the past because he was upset with the lack of oppurtunity he was being given with the Leafs. He was also waiver eligible because of time played in the NHL and theres no way he would have made it thru waivers without getting snagged. Stralman could turn out to be a solid player but things like team depth, waivers and unwillingness to play in the minors for a prolonged period of time certainly played into this deal.
We could have prolly gotten a little more but its not horrible value. We could also use the 2011 pick in some sort of trade to aquire a forward. We can prolly get a player in the second round with just as much potential as Stralman (decent prospect, overrated by leaf fans).
