Game 1: Seahawks vs. Rams 1pm pacific

The regular season is finally here. The Seahawks have the steal of the draft, a re hauled receiving unit with free agent stud TJ Houshmandzadah, a healthy Matt Hasselbeck running the show, a new Coaching Staff, and a defensive line that's ready to stuff the run and pressure the QB.

First up: The St Louis Lambs

The Lambs have a banged up Quarterback in Bulger and we may see Kyle Boller, though Bulger did take snaps in practice. They also lack any known quality receivers, but their strength: The run. Steven Jackson is a beast and a premiere back in the league. last year we had his number, and this year we've stuffed 330lbs of Colin Cole and big end Redding into the line to bolster the run defense.

Things to watch:

1-Pass pressure. Can we harass the quarterback all day long and keep him from testing out new secondary that features Ken Lucas, Jordan Babineaux, Josh Wilson and Trufant on the 6 week PUP.

2-The running game.

For the Seahawks the new blocking scheme seemed to be a slow pickup for our running backs in the preseason. Is Jones a legitimate threat for us? Is Edge ready and capable? Will Justin Forsett play bigger than his stature?

Will the Rams have success against our beefed up line and highly touted backers? Jackson is deadly and likely to the be the main weapon they throw at us with a hurting Bulger and bunch of no-name wide outs.

3-Our O-Line.
With Big Walt and Spencer out how does our line look? We certainly need to move the chains on the run, but more importantly we need a healthy Matt Hasselbeck in the fold. Word has Walt coming back next week, but ask the Patriots how many snaps it takes to lose a QB.

4-Aaron Curry- The next LT. He really looked good vs the Raiders, but that was preseason.

Predictions:

I personally think we run over the Rams like a bunch of raging beserkers and the press immediately starts the "most improved team" talk. I also think we give up some long plays and they score some flashy cheap shots. I'm gonna say: 35 to 17 'Hawks.

Oh and Dion "broken" Branch is hurt again with a hammy. Big surprise. What a waste he's been.

Good chance for the running game to get off to a good start. This division is loaded with outstanding LBers, and St. Louis is home to none of them. David Vobora, James Laurinaitis, and Will Witherspoon? Let's go, Julius and Edge.

Sucks about Branch. The Hawks version of Carlos Silva. I'd bank on a lot of Housh and Carlson downfield.

I'm saying 28-13 Hawks. Strong first effort over (what should be) an overmatched opponent.

For all the questions I have about this team, I don't think many of them will be answered this weekend. The 'Hawks can probably come in, play a lackluster game, and still eek out a win against the Rams. I am still interested in seeing how the offense gels, how the O-line holds up, how well they begin to implement the ZBS, how the pass defense looks, and what defensive alignments/blitz packages we throw out there. And to just watch some damn football already!

Well not entirely...

When Branch gets hurt: "That sucks. He has talent and can really help the team."

When Silva gets hurt: "Thank God. I hate that worthless piece of crap."

Hass looks absolutely awful. He's forcing throws into coverage...

Holy cow...the Rams just blocked a FG to tie the game...except it got called back because the Rams had 12 men on the field, and the five yard penalty gave the 'Hawks the first down...and then a TD a few plays later.

The game went from a should be 10-0 lead to a 7-7 tie to a 14-0 lead in a matter of seconds. I've never seen what just happened...

Anyone else see the absolute gift the broncos got at the end of their game?

28-0 Seahawks, 3:42 left in the 3rd Q.

Jones just took a carry 70 yards for a score. 15 carries, 109 yards for JJ thus far today.

Defense looks great, but I don't really know what that means against the Rams.

Hass has settled down after a VERY bad 1st quarter.

Housh and Burelson look good as the 1-2.

My God, we are just rolling...the line's giving Hass time and creating holes for the RB, Hass is hitting his targets, the WR/TE are spreading the field, and Knapp's keeping the Rams guessing on just about every play. This is ridiculously fun to watch.

Yep. That stupid play could cost us a great draft pick.

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but John Carlson is awesome.

Carlson was awesome. All camp long the reporters kept saying "can he really be this good?" He was the star of the preseason practices. Nice to see him shine.

Loved the pull away speed from Jones, too.

Curry brought alot of 'tude even if he didn't get any sacks:

EATTLE -- Jim Mora could remember three occasions Sunday when officials came to his side and told the Seattle coach that No. 59 needed to calm down.

Rookie Aaron Curry, that No. 59 the officials were referencing, was anything but calm in his pro debut on Sunday.
"That's my style of play. I play through passion, through enthusiasm, and through the crowd," Curry said. "Anytime you see me going crazy, that's just me."

Curry's "crazy" style of play became more of an irritation for the St. Louis Rams, who were handed a 28-0 shutout by Curry and Seattle's defense in the season opener.
St. Louis running back Steven Jackson got so flustered he whacked Curry after the whistle on the last play of the first half getting an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, and later gave Curry's facemask a swat at the end of a play.

"Some of the nastiest players I've played with are the nicest guys off the field," Seattle defensive end Patrick Kerney said. "It's fun to play with them out there. He got their whole offense mad at him ... and we've got his back."

As I saw noticed on another board, the 'Hawks ran for 167 yards, allowed no sacks, and had no holding or false start penalties all game. This from a line that looked like it could be the team's biggest liability out of training camp. Maybe they weren't joking when they said it takes a couple games before a line really starts to get how the ZBS.

And by the way, I LOVED watching it in action. All three of our RBs followed their blockers and, when they saw the hole, made their one cut and headed up field. The days of RBs dancing in the backfield and waiting for the entire line to push forward like a wall appear done. Not to make too much out of one game, but it seems clear we have RB who may not be stars but fit with the offensive scheme.

Yeah. It all looked great. I thought Josh Wilson did a great job filling in, too.

Sounds like Lofa is good, Hill is minorly injured, and we brought back DD to fill in(who I really like).

I think that means we drop a rookie off the D-line, but we look plenty deep there.

Here's a list of Carlson, Jones, and game highlights:

Very good game.

Loved Curry. He still seems to be figuring things out, but I think the coaches are doing a fantastic job of putting him in places where he can draw off of instinct more and think less.

I'm a big time Oregon fan, so take it for what it is, but I thought Unger played fantastic. He still has a lot to learn on the pro level, but he was excellent blocking down field and did a very nice job of standing his ground.

It was nice to see Burrelson back. Between he, Housh and Carlson the Hawks seem to have 3 rather reliable playmakers.
