After a week of (mostly) two-a-day practices, the Lakers have but two days to wait for Wednesday’s preseason tilt against Golden State in Anaheim, when L.A. fans will get a first glimpse at how Ron Artest fits in with the defending champs.
To get a theoretical jump on that front, much of the media focus after Monday’s practice was on Saturday evening’s intersquad scrimmage, as dictated by questions addressed to Phil Jackson, Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol.
The Spaniard explained that his team – featuring Artest, Kobe Bryant, Derek Fisher and Lamar Odom – was unbeaten, a fact that came as no surprise. When similarly prompted for scrimmage details, Jackson failed to give it too much credence; while confirming that Bryant’s team didn’t lose, the head coach quipped that he “(couldn’t) remember that far back” and offered few details.
Meanwhile, Bynum said he was matched up against Gasol at times, Josh Powell at others and even training-camp-signee Michael Fey, a rookie out of UCLA, in part due to the absence of the injured D.J. Mbenga. Bynum, who reiterated that his knees are feeling good and that making the All-Star team remains his goal, feels good about the team’s progress thus far. “This training camp is definitely a veteran style training camp,” he said. “Everyone is in their groove and ready for the season to start.”
