GM the Suns in 2010

Post#1 » by Sun Scorched » Tue Nov 3, 2009 9:26 pm

Since we are all armchair GMs on here anyways, I thought it would be fun to see the direction each of us might take our favorite franchise.

One rule, be realistic. LeBron is not coming to Phoenix.

Preface: Stoudemire needs to seriously step up his game this year in order to earn the contract that will see him walk from the Suns. Still, it would be easy to say Stoudemire stays with us, so I'm going to assume he walks to the Heat or Bulls after the season is over.

End of 2009/2010 Roster:
PG - Nash / Dragic
SG - Richardson / Barbosa / Tucker
SF - Hill / Dudley
PF - Stoudemire / Amundson / Clark
C - Frye / Lopez / Collins

Inter-team Moves:
Resign Amundson & hope Grant picks up his Player option. Frye is a bit trickier, he could just as soon pull a Tim Thomas and bolt. He has a player option and, for the sake of this exercise, i'm going to assume we reward him with a contract extension to take effect after he picks up the player option.

Extra-team Moves:

Three-way Trade (PHX, NO, NY)

Phoenix Sends:
Richardson, Barbosa, Lopez
Phoenix Receives:
West, Lee

New Orleans Sends:
West, Peterson
New Orleans Receives:
Richardson, Chandler

New York Sends:
S&T Lee, Chandler
New York Receives:
Barbosa, Peterson, Lopez

Sign Joe Johnson* to a healthy (max?) contract.
Sign Kyle Korver to the MLE.
Sign Fransisco Elson to the Bi-An.

Start of 2010/2011 Roster:

PG - Nash / Dragic
SG - Johnson* / Korver
SF - Hill / Dudley
PF - West / Amundson / Clark
C - Lee / Frye / Elson

*Obviously, if it were possible to somehow entice Wade to sign in Phoenix instead of Johnson... :droop:

I think Wade would love to play with a crew like that.

The varibale in my system is the SG position. You could bring in someone like John Salmons and then add more depth to your bench. But this is fantasy and in fantasy we don't have to be as practical... and in this scenario, you could offer the Max to a SG (Wade?). Also, I don't know if you could get Mike Miller for the MLE, but I'd love to see him here as well (in place of Korver).

This sounds fun :D

Start of 09/10

C-Frye/Lopez/Collins
PF-Amare/Clark/Amundson
SF-Hill/Dudley/Griffin
SG-J-Rich/Barbosa/Tucker
PG-Nash/Dragic

Midway through the season trades...

-Trade Barbosa to the Thunder to get the Suns 2010 first back along with Kyle Weaver. After that...

-Trade Dudley for a late 2010 second rounder rounder

-Trade Steve Nash to the Clippers for Baron Davis and Deandre Jordan

-Waive Jarron Collins

Line up after that

C-Jordan/Frye/Lopez
PF-Amare/Clark/Amundson
SF-Hill/Dudley/Griffin
SG-J-Rich/Weaver/Tucker
PG-Davis/Dragic

When it's summer time, give Amare a max extension, decline Tucker's option, waive Griffin, let Amundson walk.

Suns draft picks, their first rounder, a second rounder from the Dudley trade and the three they have in the second round.

-Sign 4/5 draft choices and keep one guy in Europe or something

The 10/11 Suns

C-Jordan/Frye/Lopez
PF-Amare/Clark/Draft pick
SF-Hill/Draft pick/Draft pick
SG-J-Rich/Draft pick/Weaver
PG-Davis/Dragic

Will we have enough room to sign anybody to a max contract next season?

Don't think so, looks like just a bit over the midlevel that's if Amare walks and Tucker's option is declined...

By the way, my final roster above is under the luxury tax.

Today on the radio everybody's favorite Gambo was talking about Amare's current contract. They were talking about amare picking up his player option next year and then becoming a FA in 2011 after all the big names are locked up. I completely forgot he had that player option next year, makes sense for him to do that if he has an average year. Then the Suns don't have to MAX him out and get 2 more years outta him while we look for his replacement whether it be Clark, via trade or draft pick. If he wants to sign with us for less than MAX then it's even better. I predict he'll excersize that option to stay with us 1 more year then hit FA in 2011.

From truehoop:

"Even though Stoudemire Inc. is due to make $17.7 million next year it still makes sense for him to opt out after this season and sign a long-term deal under the current collective bargaining agreement. If he waits to hit the market after his contract expires in 2011 then he is facing shorter contract lengths and smaller annual raises when the next CBA is ratified (possibly after a lockout).

So for trading purposes he should be viewed as an expiring contract. "

I wonder what Amare will do!

If PHX signs him for a Max deal we're screwed financially. If we trade him we got nobody in return in less that team extends him. Maybe the best option is letting him walk and picking up salary space. Eff it i dunno, sucks to be Kerr right now...

Im actually gming the Suns in the gm a team game on the trades and trasactions boards (planning on posting it up when im done see what you guys think)

This is what we look like after 2010:

we are one of the worst teams in the league in the 2009-2010 season and receive the dubious honor of the first overall pick (got our pick back in a trade)

our rotation looks like this now

John Wall/Nick Calathes
Willie Warren/Jeff Teague
Marvin Williams/Jared Dudley
Earl Clark/
Jordan Hill/

Blew it up basically and rebuilding ill give you guys the full rundown on cap situation/thinking behind it when its over

Dear God. Could that team even meet the minimum salary requirements?

Haha, also I think "blew it up" is an understatement.

Really? Barbosa as your starting PG? Gasol at C? At least my team actually has players in their natural positions...

Return to Phoenix Suns
