Pistons can't seal deal against Chris Kaman and Clippers, lose 104-96
Oops, it happened again. The Detroit Pistons led much of the way against the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night at The Palace of Auburn Hills before a fourth-quarter lapse that resulted in their seventh consecutive defeat. The Clippers ran off with a stunning 104-96 victory. Chris Kaman, a former Wyoming Tri-unity Christian High School and Central Michigan standout, led Los Angeles with 26 points, including a pair of clutch mid-range jump shots in the final minutes. He finished 11-of-13 shooting from the field and contributed seven rebounds, three assists and a block. It's the first win of Kaman's NBA career in his home state.

The Clippers (7-10), who had dropped 13 consecutive games against the Pistons, last defeated Detroit on its home court Feb. 19, 2001. It included a streak of eight consecutive losses at The Palace. The Pistons (5-11) led for much of the game. The Clippers opened the fourth quarter with an 8-2 scoring burst to pull ahead 82-77 on Marcus Camby's dunk. Kaman nailed a foul-line jumper with less than 3 minutes left and hit a 12-foot shot with 51.8 seconds remaining to seal the outcome.

Jonas Jerebko hit all four of his 3-point attempts and led the Pistons with 22 points.Rodney Stuckey, who inherited the leading scorer's role from injured Ben Gordon, finished with 21 point, seven assists and two turnovers. Will Bynum had 14 points, Austin Daye 13 and Charlie Villanueva 11. Baron Davis had 25 points for the Clippers. Al Thornton added 19, and Eric Gordon contributed 14 off the bench. The Pistons squandered a 54-47 halftime lead.

NBA Game Summary - LA Clippers at Detroit
Final Score: LA Clippers 104, Detroit 96

Chris Kaman led all scorers with 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds, as the Los Angeles Clippers got by the Detroit Pistons, 104-96, at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Baron Davis turned in a solid performance with 25 points, 10 assists and five boards, while Al Thornton added 19 points -- 12 in the fourth quarter -- for the Clippers, who snapped a 13-game losing skid to the Pistons and won for the first time in the last nine at The Palace. Eric Gordon netted 14 points for LA, which fell 86-73 at Indiana on Wednesday. The Clippers have won three of four overall. Jonas Jerebko drained all four of his three-point tries and finished with a team-best 22 points before fouling out for Detroit, which has lost seven straight games. Rodney Stuckey went for 21 points and seven assists, but also fouled out, while Austin Daye and Charlie Villanueva chipped in with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Ben Wallace dominated the glass with a game-high 16 boards to go along with five points.

With the Pistons in front 75-74 at the end of three quarters, Thornton's jumper and dunk started an 8-2 Clippers' run to open the fourth and give them an 82-77 lead with just under nine minutes to play. The Pistons were able to surge back in front after Jerebko hit from beyond the arc for an 87-86 edge, but Thornton hit back-to-back jumpers to start a 7-0 Clippers' burst and make it 93-87 with nearly 5 1/2 minutes remaining. Marcus Camby finished the surge with a three-point play. Detroit was able to close to within 99-96 after Wallace's three-point play with a shade over a minute left, but Kaman answered with a jumper on LA's next trip and never relinquish the lead. The game was deadlocked at 27 after the opening period, then Villanueva made a three-pointer and Will Bynum added a layup in the closing minute and a half of the second to put Detroit ahead 54-47 at the intermission. Things remained tight throughout the third, and with the game tied at 67, Chucky Atkins' triple with 2:59 left in the quarter put the Pistons in front. Atkins then made 1-of-2 from the stripe in the closing seconds and Detroit had a slim lead at the end of three quarters.

Game Notes
The Pistons were without guard Ben Gordon due to a sprained left ankle...Bynum ended with 14 points and nine assists off the bench...LA shot 58.7 percent from the floor, but only 2-of-10 from beyond the arc. Detroit made 39.6 percent of its shots and 8-of-17 from three-point territory.

Clippers upend Pistons 104-96
Chris Kaman's family and friends always come to see him when he visits Detroit. The center's play in the post finally sent them home with happy memories. The Michigan native scored 26 points Friday night on 11 for 13 shooting to help the Los Angeles Clippers top the Pistons 104-96 and end a 13-game skid against Detroit. "They always come," Kaman said, "but it's a lot nicer to win here. I've never won a game here before." The former Central Michigan standout had a pair of baskets in the final minutes to help thwart a Pistons rally and lead the Clippers to their third win in four tries. Baron Davis added 25 points and 10 assists and Al Thornton added 19 points. Rookie Jonas Jerebko had a career-best 22 points and Rodney Stuckey added 21 before fouling out for Detroit, which lost its seventh straight. Jerebko's 3-pointer halfway through the fourth quarter gave the Pistons an 87-86 lead.

The Clippers answered with a 7-0 run, including consecutive baskets from Thornton, to regain the lead for good. Thornton was 5 for 6 from the floor and scored 12 points in the final period. "I was asleep the first three quarters, but I woke up in the fourth quarter," he said. "Getting a win here makes it a pretty good trip." The Clippers were outrebounded 43-35 but made up for it by blocking nine Detroit shots and holding the Pistons to 40 percent field-goal shooting while making almost 60 percent. The Clippers outscored the Pistons 46-26 in the paint. "We've got a lot of guys who can post up," coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We took advantage of it." Will Bynum scored 14 points and had nine assists and Ben Wallace grabbed 16 rebounds for Detroit, which was missing three of its most able offensive contributors. "Their interior passing was superior to ours and Kaman did a really good job of sizing up what he wanted to and knocking down open looks," Pistons coach John Kuester said.

The Pistons were without guard Ben Gordon, who left Wednesday's loss to Cleveland with a sprained left ankle. He joined Richard Hamilton (ankle) and Tashaun Prince (back) on the sick list. Rookie Austin Daye made his first career start in Gordon's place and scored a career-best 13 points. Eric Gordon, playing his second game since missing eight straight with a groin injury, came off the bench to score 14 points for the Clippers. "We had a lot of guys chip in," added Dunleavy, who said he was happy to hear his son, Mike, played his first game in almost a year for Indiana on Friday.

Westbrook scored nine of his 20 points during a 17-0 run over the first 6 1/2 minutes of the second half. He also helped hold Jennings to 3-of-11 shooting and 12 points, 11.4 below his average.

Carlos Delfino and Hakim Warrick each scored 15 points for Milwaukee, and Ersan Ilysasova grabbed 12 rebounds.

Rookie duo can't rescue Pistons
The Pistons took a peek into the future and liked what they saw. They just didn't like the final result, which was a 104-96 loss Friday night to the Los Angeles Clippers (7-10) at The Palace. You can't fault rookies Jonas Jerebko and Austin Daye, who took advantage of another Pistons injury to show they can be important cogs in the future. They brought energy and surprising scoring to a lineup badly in need of scoring punch without leading scorer Ben Gordon, who missed the game with a left ankle sprain. He joined Rip Hamilton (ankle) and Tayshaun Prince (ruptured disc) on the sideline. The trio represents 63 percent of the Pistons offense, 58 points a game. The Pistons wanted to win it with defense but the Clippers had too much energy and surprising execution down the stretch. They shot 59 percent and overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to win going away.

Now the Pistons (5-11) must regroup for Sunday's 1 p.m. home game against the Atlanta Hawks. The hero this night was Jerebko (22 points, five rebounds) who kept the Pistons in the game with old school back door plays and 3-point baskets. He was a bundle of energy and not only filled the basket with jumpers but swept the floor with hustle plays. He might have been even more effective if not for getting into foul trouble, which caused him to be more cautious on defense. He fouled out during the final minute. Jerebko and Daye (13 points, five rebounds) became the first rookies to start together for the Pistons since Allan Houston and Lindsey Hunter started on April 24, 1994, after Isiah Thomas (ruptured tendon) missed the final regular season game during a dismal 20-62 season. Thomas retired at the end of the season and the Pistons brought in another rookie -- Grant Hill -- who turned into an All-Star before leaving the team for Orlando. Rodney Stuckey chipped in 21 points and seven assists and Ben Wallace five points and 16 rebounds. However, the Pistons shot just 41 percent. Both Daye and Jerebko had their moments, but it was Jerebko who became a go-to guy during two important stretches. The Pistons trailed 39-38 late in the second quarter when Jerebko went to work. He hit a hook shot, layup and 3-point shot to propel the Pistons to a 54-47 halftime lead.

In the fourth he rallied the Pistons to an 87-86 lead on two back-door cuts and a 3-point basket. Daye was steady throughout and finished with 13 points and five rebounds. During one stretch the Pistons fielded one of the tallest lineups in the NBA, even though the 6-foot Will Bynum led the unit at point guard. He was surrounded by 6-9 Wallace, 6-10 Jerebko and 6-11 forwards Charlie Villanueva and Daye. The Clippers took over in the fourth quarter. Marcus Camby's three-point play with 5:32 remaining gave them a 93-87 lead. The Clippers extended the lead to 97-90 before Jerebko hit a 3-point basket to slice it to 97-93. But the dagger came moments later when former Central Michigan star Chris Kaman (26 points, seven rebounds) hit a jumper in the lane to extend the lead to six. Clippers forward Al Thornton (19 points, four rebounds) made critical plays down the stretch and Baron Davis led the Clippers with 25 points and 10 assists. After the Kaman basket the Pistons fought to the bitter end. Ben Wallace made a three-point play to slice the lead to 99-96 with 1:07 remaining. But Kaman hit another jumper to make it 101-96.

Postgame Quotes - November 27, 2009
Regular Season Game #16

Pistons Head Coach John Kuester
(On the game)

“I thought we were in decent shape in the first half and then in the second half they were the aggressors and we weren’t. We’ve got to be the team that is more aggressive. Their interior passing was superior to ours and (Chris) Kaman did a really good job of seizing up what he wanted to do and knocking down open looks. I was disappointed with this loss because we had a chance and normally we’ve shown a lot of grit at the end of the fourth period and we didn’t show the same type of grit that we have in the past.”
(On the Pistons struggles)
“I thought Jonas (Jerebko) did a nice job and I thought that Austin (Daye) came in and tried to compete but guys that we’re counting on to show leadership through this tough time - they just need to step up. This is a team that plays with confidence and I believe in them and they just can’t have slippages right now.”

(On Jonas Jerebko)
“His overall game was outstanding tonight. He was somebody who had a different gear than the other players. He understood it wasn’t just standing still, being a spectator, he was a participant on everything we were trying to do. Some of the backdoor cuts, some of the open looks where he knocked down open threes. He’d been struggling at that long shot so it was good to see him get into a rhythm.
(On Ben Wallace)
“Well, you know, he’s a warrior. It’s interesting, we rely so heavily on him for so many things and his effort is always there. One of the things I take for granted a lot of the times is that whoever he’s guarding - I don’t think they’re going to score. I thought that Kaman made some tough shots but Ben is always going to compete and that’s one thing about him: night in and night out you’re always going to have that kind of competitiveness.”

(On the Clippers making a run when Wallace came out of the game)
“As they should. We’ve got to have another guy step up. We’ve had people come off the bench that have given us a boost at time but we’re not playing at the same type of intensity that I expect out of us.”
“I like the philosophy of understanding that you can’t do too much because then you start getting out of your comfort (zone). I think the comfort level needs to come out on the defensive end. You need to expand yourself defensively because we need to get stops. If you worry about what we’re doing offensively, we’re not going to win. We’ve got to get some stops and we’ve had that in the past but tonight we didn’t get the stops in the fourth quarter that we have been in some of our games. I like the philosophy of guys understanding don’t do too much and especially when you’re short-handed, don’t beat yourself. When you’re in a situation when it’s a game of spurts and you give up those four, six-point spurts; we try to avoid that as much as possible.”

Pistons Guard Will Bynum
(On the game)

“We knew it’s going to be tough. We got a tough team and they played well tonight. It’s just a tough loss for us.”

(On making adjustments)
“We need to play a little faster. That’s the only way with all these guys out (Prince, Hamilton, Gordon), the only way we are going to be in the games for so long. We can play in spurts, but we got to play faster and get some easy buckets out there. We got to run. Run all sets quicker, we got to get to quicker sets. There is no other way.“

(On Jonas Jerebko)
“Jonas played great tonight. We always know one thing about Jonas (Jerebko), we will always get 110% effort every time. Jonas has just been great all season.” “Our confidence doesn’t go anywhere. We are professionals so we have to stay with that mindset. The best thing about the NBA is that we have another game on Sunday. We got to regroup and try to get our stuff together and get a win on Sunday.”

Clippers Head Coach Mike Dunleavy
(On the win)

"Anytime you get a win on the road you're happy. I thought defensively we were good but obviously the areas of concern were the offensive boards, they were allowed to stay in this game, and the turnovers in the first half. We were playing well and we let them hang around. It's just a recipe for disaster but in the second half we came out and got ourselves back in the game. In the fourth quarter we were really good."

(On the team)
"Al (Thornton) had a big fourth quarter for us; which was necessary. Chris (Kaman) made some big shots down the stretch. Baron (Davis) made some big plays for us and a lot of guys chipped in. Eric (Gordon) is still trying to get the rust off, but again he helped us defensively and he had a lot of deflections and he moved his feet much better. He said his legs felt better tonight."

(On their points in the paint)
"We've got some guys that can post up and we did a good job of getting them there. Took advantage of it. When we got on the open court we were able to get some easy buckets on the fast break."

Clippers Center Chris Kaman
(On the game and road record)

"When you think about it we should have been 2-for-2. 2-0 on the road. We let that game get away from us in Indianapolis. You can't look at the past. You just have to move forward. We got the win tonight and we got the win in the fourth quarter. We played pretty well in the fourth quarter and did a good job which is where we've struggled. We did a good job and finished the game."

(On his game)
"I feel better. It gave me a confidence boost hitting the first three shots of the game. It makes you feel good and gets you rolling. I just took my time. Last game I was rushing a little bit. We did a good job defensively and they let me go single coverage with Ben Wallace, they didn't really double team me, and I took advantage of it and scored the basketball. My teammates did a good job of getting me the basketball. They made plays down the stretch."

Clippers Forward Al Thornton
(On their two-game East Coast road trip)

"It makes it a good trip. 1-1 on a road trip, we'd like to be 2-0, but 1-1 isn't bad at all. We'll take it. It's been a while, that I can recall, about two-or-three years since we've won here. Coming off that devastating loss against Indiana it feels good to finish the road trip up 1-1."

(On his game)
"I was asleep the whole game and I finally woke up in the fourth quarter. It was a good way to end it out."
