OT: What is your shooting % laker fans? a test

Post#1 » by Speedlot » Fri Jan 8, 2010 3:53 pm

A test for all of you.

200 layups

200 Mid-range Jumpshots (12ft'ers)

200 Free throws

200 3point chuckers :) (college 3's)

Unguarded and rest between each drill. We're not pros!

I was 185/200 for layups 0.925

77/200 for jumpers 0.385

136/200 free throws 0.68

72/200 threes 0.36

I'm about 5'7, and probably (lols) overweight.

I would rather take my kids and shoot around and have some family time out of the courts.

I haven't played ball in a while, so I'm sure I suck at just about everything including layups. I used to be a damn good 3-point shooter though (hit for 50+% in actual games as a backup PG). I guess you kind of have to be when you're a midget, at least compared to all the 6+ footers I used to play with.

Haven't done the actual test but I'd be

~98% layups
~85% FTs, Usually make 9/10 give or take one here and there
~70% jumpers, just practicing I don't miss a whole lot
~55% 3 - similar
~50% NBA range
granted this is all shooting uncontested in an empty gym

I was on fire a few weeks ago and shot 500 3s and made 426 :o I could not miss and had a streak of 23 in a row at one point... but since then I've been a little off, my knees and legs are just not holding up well lately and its making my range off.

I live in a building that has Carmello's signature court in it so I shoot around on a nightly basis. I've always been a good shooter, would have set the Utah high school record if I shot more, I was 9-11 from 3 my senior year lol but we had a really small team so I had to play down in the post most of the game. I got my 3s at the end of games when we would run our spread offense to hold leads. But my shot got really good about 2 years ago when I started playing again after a few years of not touching a ball. I have smallish hands for my size (6'2") I changed my grip after watching a few NBA players a little more closely and once I got used to it my efficiency went way up. I still think I could have had a small chance to be an NBA role player if I never had the knee injuries (tore my ACL twice) and maybe a little more height. I'm going to make a shooting video one of these days. Man I just wish I had the knowledge and skills I have now, with the healthy body I had at 20... Such is life :)

The 800 shots took me 45 mins of work. Given I had a friend with me who was with me doing the rebounding... but some of you guys make it out like it takes 10 hours -_-. Regardless an estimation is good as well, like from supaflash. : )

Eh it comes and goes, some days I can't hit crap  Shooting is just something that I do to get away, think, relax, loosen up after being on a computer all day... I actually consider myself more of a scorer then a pure shooter. I don't feel like my shot is truly pure because I tend to adjust it too much by how I feel, and by shooting off balance. I have no hops anymore so I had to come up with better ways to get my shot off. Plus empty gym shooting is way different then in games, a bit of contact or defense, even just the adrenaline and tiredness can be way different when you shoot more then you play. When I played more then I shot, it wasn't an issue, but these days I shoot way more then I actually play. Although I try to practice shooting at game speed, so that helps.

Shooting is interesting though, there is a very large mental aspect. I can be streaky because I start to think about the shot too much, start trying to make adjustments instead of just shooting. When I'm more relaxed or in the zone the muscle memory kicks in. There was a guy that wrote a book about it, guy could sink literally 100s of FTs or 3s in a row because he taught himself to let go of the thought process of the shot. His theory is that essentially a shot is far too complex to actually be able to think about it and adjust it properly on your own, angle distance, engery, motion etc. and that if you can truly teach your mind to let go, your subconcious will always shoot it better. I try to do that at times, and when you really find the zone its pretty amazing, but I think too much haha. I dunno, but I find it fascinating. I shoot really high arc with a lot of rotation and I like to see angles and adjust to fading and movement etc. Thats one of the reasons I love watching Kobe so much because it feels like he sees the same thing, how he can adjust arc and angle and whatnot to shoot in any position. Like the Miami game winner, to shoot it high and back to the right a bit to adjust for his lean. So many guyrs would just launch a flat brick or be way off to the left.

Those percentages aren't even that great though, I bet most good NBA shooters can probably hit in the high 70s and 80s even from 3 in empty gym shooting. But I've always felt that if I had shooting coaches, rebounders, played every day, etc that I could get ot that level. Now being able to get a shot off in a game... lol entirely different story Not to mention that even though I'm a good defender, I''d probably make Fish look like he was an elite PG defender

Lay-ups - 0 of 200.
Half-court shots - 200 of 200.

It's useless to ask 'cause I'm not sure that all the stats shown here are true.

I counted only once when I shot like 75 FTs in a row with two of my friends counting and rebounding helping me to keep the rhythm, but for everything else, not.

I usually make hell of a lot of mid-range jump-shopts and 3 pointers when I practice but the percentage drops dramatically down in the game 'cause of my hurry and defense.

I still play with the college guys but being 6feet and getting slower at age 28 sucks. I don't know how much longer I can keep it up working

I will destroy at Horse.

I can beat Kevin Love, but although I'm shooting better with age, I'm slow and I can't dunk anymore...grrr

True story

I was called up to shoot free throws at a preseason game (Kwames first game)... I made like a 4 page post on real GM at the time...

The cool thing was I was listening to the huddle and PJ and Kobe talking ball during a time out. I was so intrigued by their conversation I kind of started getting closer and closer to the huddle and then the buzzer sounded and I ran over to the free throw line and shot an AIR BALL nerves. I yelled and the Laker girl was all like what the heck. Then I didn't miss. I wore a Lakers jersey and I played against a star player from the Kings (Hockey) that wore a Wizards jersey. Great game it went to OT shortly after I shot... but when I left the court LO who probably saw my expressive (and wasnt paying as much attention during the timeout) face during the air ball, told me "you shoot better than Shaq!"

I don't have more than a blurry cell phone pic of it. They gave me a gift certificate for $100 in merch, and my family was there so I can tell the story but I wish I could trade the stupid certificate for a super high quality picture to hang. It sounds SOOOO cool to hear a packed house cheer when you hit a shot. I think thats why I didn't miss, I was shocked by the crowds reaction. I MUST SAY THAT DAY WAS A GOOD DAY!
