A 14-26 record normally wouldn't be acceptable. But considering the Pistons have missed Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Ben Gordon and Will Bynum for significant amounts of time, first-year coach John Kuester probably would take it (if you could get him to be candid). Despite the travails, the Pistons are in contention for a playoff spot because they compete in the woeful Eastern Conference. The Pistons are 4 1/2 games behind the Chicago Bulls for the eighth and final playoff spot. They would be buried in the Western Conference, but in the East, six-game winning streaks can put you into the thick of things. Starting tonight, the Pistons have an opportunity to make fans believe their playoff talk when they begin a rare six-game home stand. The Pistons can make a case that all six are winnable, despite some tough names. "We got all home games, and we must protect our home court," Charlie Villanueva said. "We're playing some good teams, though. Hopefully we get (injured teammates back), and hopefully we can go on this run." Here's a look at the six opponents.
• Tonight vs. Boston: Rasheed Wallace returns to the Palace, but superstar Kevin Garnett (right knee) is expected to miss the game, making the Celtics tough but vulnerable.
• Friday vs. Indiana: The Pacers have played better since the return of star Danny Granger from injury, but this is a must-win for the Pistons.
• Saturday vs. Portland: The Blazers got the Pistons earlier this season, but most of their size (centers Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla) is out for the season, so this is a winnable game.
• Jan. 27 vs. Memphis: This could be one of the tougher games as the Grizzlies have bounced back from being routed in the opener by the Pistons to challenge for a playoff spot in the West.
• Jan. 29 vs. Miami: Kobe Bryant and Carmelo Anthony have scored at will against the Pistons this season, so Dwyane Wade is licking his chops. But the Heat lacks balance and on many nights is a one-man gang.
• Jan. 31 vs. Orlando: The Magic is one of the best teams in the East, but chemistry problems between Rashard Lewis and Vince Carter have slowed the progress.
It's hard to see the Pistons going 6-0, but to tread water until they get back to full strength, 5-1 or 4-2 is a must. Despite all the adversity, they still think a long run of victories is in this team -- as long as they get everybody back. "We know what we have," Ben Wallace said. "But we haven't had the chance to put it on the floor. We know what this team is capable of doing, but we just hadn't had a chance to really be consistent with all our weapons on the floor."
