INJURY UPDATE: Tayshaun Prince, who hadn't missed a game since his rookie season in 2002, has missed 34 this season with a bad back and left knee. Prince, along with Ben Gordon (right groin), is a game-time decision against the Celtics.

Kuester said he didn't know whether Prince would start once he was healthy. "We have to see where he's at," Kuester said. "That's something that we'll sit down with him and talk about."

For tonight's game, Will Bynum (left ankle) is out, and Richard Hamilton (upset stomach) and Chris Wilcox (back) are probable.

Despite record, playoffs still possible for Pistons
A 14-26 record normally wouldn't be acceptable. But considering the Pistons have missed Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Ben Gordon and Will Bynum for significant amounts of time, first-year coach John Kuester probably would take it (if you could get him to be candid). Despite the travails, the Pistons are in contention for a playoff spot because they compete in the woeful Eastern Conference. The Pistons are 4 1/2 games behind the Chicago Bulls for the eighth and final playoff spot. They would be buried in the Western Conference, but in the East, six-game winning streaks can put you into the thick of things. Starting tonight, the Pistons have an opportunity to make fans believe their playoff talk when they begin a rare six-game home stand. The Pistons can make a case that all six are winnable, despite some tough names. "We got all home games, and we must protect our home court," Charlie Villanueva said. "We're playing some good teams, though. Hopefully we get (injured teammates back), and hopefully we can go on this run." Here's a look at the six opponents.

• Tonight vs. Boston: Rasheed Wallace returns to the Palace, but superstar Kevin Garnett (right knee) is expected to miss the game, making the Celtics tough but vulnerable.
• Friday vs. Indiana: The Pacers have played better since the return of star Danny Granger from injury, but this is a must-win for the Pistons.
• Saturday vs. Portland: The Blazers got the Pistons earlier this season, but most of their size (centers Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla) is out for the season, so this is a winnable game.
• Jan. 27 vs. Memphis: This could be one of the tougher games as the Grizzlies have bounced back from being routed in the opener by the Pistons to challenge for a playoff spot in the West.
• Jan. 29 vs. Miami: Kobe Bryant and Carmelo Anthony have scored at will against the Pistons this season, so Dwyane Wade is licking his chops. But the Heat lacks balance and on many nights is a one-man gang.
• Jan. 31 vs. Orlando: The Magic is one of the best teams in the East, but chemistry problems between Rashard Lewis and Vince Carter have slowed the progress.

It's hard to see the Pistons going 6-0, but to tread water until they get back to full strength, 5-1 or 4-2 is a must. Despite all the adversity, they still think a long run of victories is in this team -- as long as they get everybody back. "We know what we have," Ben Wallace said. "But we haven't had the chance to put it on the floor. We know what this team is capable of doing, but we just hadn't had a chance to really be consistent with all our weapons on the floor."

Ex-minority owner: Pistons want a sale
Ex-minority owner: Pistons want a sale. Oscar Feldman, a former minority owner of the Pistons, told Crain's Detroit Business that Karen Davidson is making an attempt to sell the team. "Karen is inquiring into selling the team, and her limited partners concur in that decision," Feldman said in a story posted online Tuesday afternoon.

The Free Press reported online Monday and in Tuesday's print editions that the Pistons were not for sale now but could be soon, according to a person close to the situation. That position was reiterated Tuesday. Davidson assumed control of the franchise after her husband Bill's death March 13. It's believed that any decision to sell the team would not be made solely by Davidson but by a collection of the heirs and trustees of the estate.

Feldman told Crain's he sold his stake in the Pistons to the Davidson estate in October. Feldman did not return messages from the Free Press. The Free Press contacted Tim Frank, NBA vice president of basketball communications, regarding a report that Karen Davidson had a discussion with NBA commissioner David Stern about selling the team. Frank, who handles media inquiries for Stern, wrote in an e-mail: "I am not aware of anything on this."

'Sheed returns to Palace
The Pistons will have two Wallaces in the house again tonight. One, Rasheed Wallace, below, will be making his first appearance at the Palace as a Boston Celtic. The other, Ben Wallace, thinks fans will have a mixed reception for 'Sheed. "He'll get some cheers and he'll get some boos," Ben Wallace said.

Really? Not just boos except when he gets called for a technical? Ben must have forgotten his reception when he came back as a member of the also-hated Chicago Bulls: BOO! "That was just what I expected," Ben said then, after that 2007 game.

But enough about the crowd and the past: What does he expect from Rasheed on the court tonight? "It'll make for some exciting basketball since he's one of those guys who had never fouled anyone since he has been in the league," Ben said. Here's what Rasheed had to say about tonight: "I look forward to going back there and grabbing a bite to eat with a couple of the guys and catch up on some old times."

Boston Celtics (27-12) at Detroit Pistons (14-26), 7:30 p.m.
The Boston Celtics are starting to play like the rest of their Atlantic Division counterparts and will try to get on track Wednesday on the road against the Detroit Pistons at The Palace of Auburn Hills. The division-leading Celtics have lost two straight, three of four and seven of their last 11 games. The losing trend continued Monday at home in a 99-90 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, as Paul Pierce posted 24 points and Ray Allen added 21 for Boston, which has dropped three straight at home. It was Boston's seventh home loss (11-7) this season after having just six last year. "The third quarter we came out and we didn't have great energy, we didn't do the things we did in the first two quarters that gave us the lead we had at that point," Allen said. "We've got to put together 48 minutes if we want to be good and successful for a longer period of time."

Rajon Rondo had seven points and 12 assists, while Rasheed Wallace scored 11 points in a losing effort. The Celtics will now hit the road where they sport a solid 16-5 ledger. Detroit knows a whole lot about struggling and hopes to get back into the win column Wednesday against the C's in the opener of a six-game homestand. After losing a season-high 13 straight games, the Pistons turned the corner with three consecutive victories before falling back to mediocrity with Monday's 99-91 road loss against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Rodney Stuckey had 22 points to pace the banged-up Pistons. Ben Wallace finished with a season-high 16 points to go with 14 boards to earn the praise from his coach. "He played extremely well," Pistons coach John Kuester said of Wallace. "He's competed the entire season. He did a great job on the boards. We needed other people to step up and we didn't get the production in certain situations."

The Pistons were without guards Richard Hamilton (virus) and Ben Gordon (groin) against the Celtics. Hamilton and forward Tayshaun Prince (knee) are both questionable for Wednesday and Gordon is listed as doubtful. Detroit will also host the Pacers, Blazers, Grizzlies, Heat and Magic, and owns a 10-9 mark at The Palace this season. Boston took three of four matchups with Detroit a year ago, but the Pistons have won 15 of the last 21 meetings between the teams. Boston has won three straight after losing its last seven at Detroit.

Report: Former minority owner confirms Karen Davidson plans to sell Detroit Pistons
The Detroit Pistons franchise Bill Davidson owned from 1974 until his death last year is up for sale according to former business partner Oscar Feldman.Oscar Feldman, a longtime minority owner of the Detroit Pistons before selling his stake last October, has confirmed that Karen Davidson hopes to sell the franchise according to a report by Bill Shea of Crain's Detroit Business.

January 19, Detroit Crain's: “Karen is inquiring into selling the team, and her limited partners concur in that decision,” Oscar Feldman told Crain’s this afternoon. Davidson could not be reached for comment, and multiple calls to Tom Wilson, president Palace Sports & Entertainment, which manages the Pistons and other holdings, have not been returned.

The Detroit Free Press also attempted, but was unable, to obtain additional confirmation to Shea's report. January 20, Detroit Free Press: The Free Press contacted Tim Frank, NBA vice president of basketball communications, regarding a report that Karen Davidson had a discussion with NBA commissioner David Stern about selling the team. Frank, who handles media inquiries for Stern, wrote in an e-mail: "I am not aware of anything on this."

Bob Wojnowksi of The Detroit News: "They've been wary adversaries for years, competing for some of the same fans, the same arena events, the same dollars. But times change and necessities rise, and a new reality should dawn here. Yes, more than ever, the Pistons and Red Wings need each other. Finally, there should be mutual motivation and benefits between the storied franchises. The answer makes perfect economic sense: The Wings and Pistons need to finance and share a new arena in downtown Detroit. Oh, it will take a few years and a lot of cajoling, but I believe it has to happen. Wings owner Mike Ilitch certainly doesn't want to leave Detroit, where he has invested so much, financially and emotionally. But 31-year-old Joe Louis Arena has aged beyond reasonable repair, and the team's lease is up June 30. ... Much is speculative now, but it won't be long before harsh realities set in. The Pistons and Wings have played the game brilliantly for years, but the game has changed. For the good of the area and for their own economic viability, they need to learn from each other, and yes, lean on each other."

The Pistons are battling to get into the playoff picture while the Celtics are contending for the best record in the East. But their fans do have this in common: they’ve spent a lot of time waiting for their stars to come back. As of Tuesday night, the status of five Pistons was up in the air for tonight’s game with the Celtics. Rip Hamilton, who missed Monday’s loss at New York with a stomach virus, and Chris Wilcox, who did not play in the second half due to back spasms, are probable. Both players would start if they can play. Tayshaun Prince (left knee) and Ben Gordon (groin), neither of whom have been a factor since Jan. 9, are game-time decisions. Will Bynum, who has yet to play in 2010, is the only Piston ruled out. Those five players account for 61.8 of Detroit’s 92.2 points per game – or 67 percent of the team’s total offensive production.

The Celtics’ list is nowhere near as extensive, but involves the team’s most important defensive and offensive players, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. Garnett practiced Tuesday, but won’t return until Friday and will miss tonight’s game, his 9th straight. His last game was Dec. 28. Five of Boston’s 12 losses have come with Garnett on the sideline. The Celtics are allowing nearly 100 points per game without Garnett – eight more than when the 2008 Defensive Player of the Year is in the lineup. Boston ranks No. 2 in scoring defense (93.8 ppg) for the season. The Celtics will have Pierce, however, who missed two weeks around the holiday season with knee pain. The Celtics’ leading scorer is averaging 20.1 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists in January; he had 24 points in Monday’s home loss to the Mavericks.

Despite prolonged absences by Pierce and Garnett, the Celtics have maintained the second best record in the East (27-12) thanks to consistency from their other three starters – Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen and Kendrick Perkins – who have just one missed game among them. Rondo is posting double-doubles almost every night (13.8 ppg, 9.7 apg), Allen is Boston’s second leading scorer (16.3) and Perkins is averaging 12.4 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.1 blocks. The Celtics are 4-6 in their last 10 games and have lost two straight but actually are better on the road (16-5) than they are at TD Banknorth Garden (11-7).

Scouting Report - Boston Celtics
Scott Perry talks with the Pistons Weekly's Pete Skorich about tonight's game against the Celtics.

Sheed Returns Tonight
Wallace Ben Wallace was the first starter from the Pistons’ 2004 championship team to return as an opponent – he did so as a Chicago Bull in 2006-07 – so he has a pretty good idea how the Palace crowd will receive Rasheed Wallace, who makes his first appearance as a Boston Celtic tonight.
“They’re going to cheer for him for the things he did while he was here,” Ben said, “and they’re going to boo him because he left and they wish he was still here.” Rasheed’s five and a half seasons in Detroit opened with a bang and closed with a thud. Acquired at the 2004 trade deadline, Wallace brought swagger (GuaranSheed, anyone?) and low-post scoring to Detroit. Four months later, he and the Pistons were NBA champions. But Rasheed provided neither swagger nor much scoring as the team fell from contention last season. Wallace went scoreless in his final game as a Piston, missing seven shots as Cleveland swept Detroit in the first round. “Rasheed’s a character and he’s a great player and he had a great run here,” said Pistons coach John Kuester. “I think the fans do appreciate what he did for this organization.”

Wallace, 35, signed with the Celtics for the chance to win a second championship. Predominantly a bench player for the first time in his 15-year career, Wallace is averaging 10.4 points and 4.5 rebounds. “That’s a great fit for him, especially when you got guys like KG, Paul and Ray,” Ben Wallace said, referring to Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. “It takes a lot of the attention off him so he can just go out and do his thing.” Rasheed scored a season-high 29 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including five triples, against Toronto Jan. 10. He’s only scored 20 points in one other game. He then missed three games with a foot injury, but returned Monday against the Mavericks, posting 11 points and three rebounds in 36 minutes. Ben Wallace, also 35, is looking forward to facing his former teammate. The two often guarded each other when Ben played for Chicago and Cleveland. “It will make for some exciting basketball, since he’s one of those guys that hasn’t fouled anybody since he got in the league,” Ben quipped. Ben has posted a different season high in the last three games: 21 rebounds against New Orleans Friday, four blocked shots Saturday against the Knicks and 16 points on 8-of-13 shooting Monday at New York.

It appears Chauncey Billups and Allen Iverson just can't escape each other
Former Piston Allen Iverson and his roughly 14 points per game are on the verge of being voted into the All-Star Game starting lineup. Now, it's not as egregious as the fact that Tracy McGrady, who's played like 20 minutes all season, is also a likely starter, but still.

And of course Iverson has no intention of ceding his spot if he's healthy enough to play: “If I'm healthy, I'll go,” Iverson said. “But I'm going to do the best thing for this team. That's the most important thing. I want to be able to make sure my fans are happy, because they want to see me play. But I have to be smart about the future of this franchise right here.” And it just so happens that the man Iverson was controversially traded for has something to say on the matter: "You end up having guys that are in that position that are taking away from some deserving guys,'' Denver guard Chauncey Billups said in an interview with FanHouse about the possibility of Iverson getting elected in the East or McGrady in the West.

Billups also advocates allowing the players to vote for All-Star starters rather than fans. Why? Because fans look really stupid every year. And they don't just mess up by voting undeserving guys in, but by voting insanely undeserving guys in. It's really embarrassing ... it's like they're sitting around, playing NBA Live 2001 and thinking that guys like Iverson, McGrady and Vince Carter are still awesome. The problem, however, is not the voting system. It's the fact that we went through an era of NBA basketball where the heavily marketed stars simply weren't as good as the Jordan/Magic/Bird era of heavily marketed stars. The league's poster boys were Iverson, Carter and McGrady. We were getting hyped about playoff battles that featured Carter shooting fadeaways while Glen Robinson did everything he could to avoid playing defense. There's always a hierarchical thinking out there when it comes to NBA (and sports) fandom: the old-timers have earned certain things, therefore they should be respected and loved for the rest of their playing days. I think this gets applied to guys who benefited from playing in a period when the NBA was bereft of transcendent talent. You know what, badly reasoning fans? Chris Paul is better right now than Allen Iverson ever was. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony are better right now than Carter or McGrady ever were. And right now? There are about 100 players I'd rather watch at any given time than Carter, Iverson or McGrady. And that's not necessarily to disrespect any of those three -- they would be decent players at any time in the history of the modern NBA, but at no time would they have been considered superstars, other than that wretched post-Jordan/pre-LeBron/Wade/Kobe era that they played in. The good news is, with their careers winding down, All-Star Game starting lineups will soon be dominated by James/Bosh/Howard/Wade/Anthony/Paul/et. al. as it should be.

Will Piston Fans Heckle Rasheed Wallace's Return?
Tonight Rasheed Wallace return's to Auburn Hills with the Boston Celtics. Wallace has played in 36 games for Boston and has averaged 24 minutes, 10 points, and 4.5 rebounds. Wallace will start tonight due to Kevin Garnett sitting out with a sore knee, according to Boston's head coach, Doc Rivers. Rivers doesn't want Garnett to play till Friday against Portland.

It sends chills up my spine just thinking of Wallace wearing the Celtic Green and White—lasting bad memories of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parrish. Yuck. Boston has its new three-headed monster in Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen. Pierce has a sore knee but, played in the Lost Monday to Dallas and scored 24 points. Allen scored 21 for Boston in that contest. The Pistons haven't been able to get their big scorers healthy. "Rip" Hamilton sat out the game against the Knicks with the flu. Tayshaun Prince, Ben Gordon, and Will Bynum did not play in the last game due to injuries.

Prince's layoff is one with big questions. He was the Pistons' iron man so to speak.
He'd played all 82 games in six-straight seasons until this year. He's played in only nine games thus far.In his rookie season he only played in 42 games. Prince has also played in 118 playoff games. Can he still be the Pistons' iron man? With rookies Jones Jerebko and Austin Daye playing well, Tayshaun might be the odd man out.

Game Day Film Session: Johnny Most epitomized homerism
I love this clip because it reminds me of when I fell in love with Pistons’ basketball and why I hated the Celtics. The late Johnny Most’s über-biased raspy voice fanned the flames of the late 80’s rivalry. It also made me pull even harder for the Bad Boys so I could imagine Johnny’s personal dejection.
