Not sure were that got their info, but there is not way in hades that the Jazz trade Ronnie Brewer a for a late first round draft pick.
There was an article over a month ago where Jazz managment stated that they are not trying to cut salary this season, they are only reluctant to take on new salary next season, after Boozer's salary goes off the books.

My guess is that Memphis thought that they had a great idea, and called up the Jazz. Proposed to take the Jazz's starting SG off their hands for a late first round draft pick. The Jazz were courteous and said "thank you for the call," and then hung up and laughed.
But your point is correct, maybe someone within the Grizzlie's organization painted a rosier picture about the discussion, than it was in reality.
